It’s strange when you really think about it.

Somehow, humans decided other living beings could be “owned.” Not cared for. Not protected. Owned. As if a living, feeling individual could ever truly belong to someone else.

Animals did not create that system. Humans did.

At Haven Hill, we try to be intentional with language because language shapes the way we see others.

The chickens here are not “its.”
They are not objects.
They are not things.
They are he, she, they, them. Someone, not something.

And we are not their owners. We are their caretakers. Their guardians. The people responsible for keeping them safe in a world humans created for them without their consent.

Domestication made animals dependent on us. But dependence is not the same thing as ownership.

Maybe it seems small.
Just words.
But words are powerful.

The language we choose can either reinforce the idea that animals exist for us… or remind people that they exist with us. ❤️

So I bought 4 light Sussex pullets. They were all put in a pen for quarantine. Not less than 24hrs I walked in the next morning to check them and there was only 3! I searched everywhere and only to find I walked passed the culprit a carpet python with a lump in its belly!!!! I'm so upset the poor little girl didn't have a chance! I feel terrible! 😭

**Hen Re-Homing 12th April**

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

Due to circs outside of both ours and the wonderful control, they cannot take the the number of hens they normally do at our rehoming in April.

So we need to re-home A LOT of hens ourselves on the 12th April.

1,500 hens to be exact!

They’ve worked their socks off for us, so we’re really need to return the favour and find them new homes.
