Adding pattern is the perfect way to energise a space, by anchoring patterns and playing around with the scale ⚖️ you can create spatial clarity and faster processing times for our design layouts.
Why is that so important? If your visual input is inconsistent to the eye it creates cognitive overload which in turn creates fatigue. We want visually pleasing spaces that allow us to relax.
Visual or cognitive overload happens unconsciously within a few hundred milliseconds. If what we see has too many focal points, patterns and colours we work overtime to make sense of it, and that’s mentally tiring.
The secret is to combine the right combinations, and it is a skill.
Blue and yellow are cool and warm colours respectively, providing both soothing tones and warmth. This high contrast prevents a space from feeling flat and dull.
If you look at this design again you can see how the wooden floors ground the space. The checks and stripes are in harmony with each other due to the shared colour scheme that unifies their contrasting patterns.
Most importantly, there is a balanced contrast of grids and linear movement ( checks and stripes).
Scale is controlled by the balance of thick stripes and smaller checks. It’s all an equilibrium ⚖️
