Transform Your Bathroom into a Private Sanctuary

Ever wondered how to capture that Balinese resort feeling without leaving home? It’s all about the balance of raw, organic textures and bringing the “outside in.”

For this recent renovation, we moved away from the standard “white and bright” to create a moody, grounding escape. If you’re looking to recreate this peaceful vibe in your own home, here are three design principles we used:

1. Embrace Biophilic Design
Don’t just put a pot on the counter—integrate your greenery. We designed this custom-formed concrete vanity with a built-in planter. Using an integrated solution ensures your plants feel like a permanent architectural feature rather than an afterthought, instantly lowering cortisol levels the moment you walk in.

2. Texture Over Color
To achieve that authentic Wabi-sari aesthetic, we used Japanese Shou Sugi Ban (charred wood) for the cladding. The deep, velvety carbon finish provides a stunning contrast to the river stone basin. When choosing materials, look for items that feel “found” rather than “manufactured.”

3. Mix the Elements
A successful sanctuary balances the “hard” and the “soft.”
• Concrete & Stone: Provide the grounding, earthy foundation.
• Charred Wood: Adds warmth and a sense of history.
• Living Foliage: Softens the industrial lines and adds movement.

Design Tip: When using dark textures like Shou Sugi Ban, ensure you have soft, indirect lighting (like the linear LED strip seen here) to highlight the grain without creating harsh shadows.

Bringing a design vision to life is a journey built on trust and shared ideas. For this Roseville project, the process was all about stripping away the overwhelm and focusing on the client's specific needs for their home.

By working as a partner rather than just a designer, we were able to navigate a vast scope of work together. Whether it was finding that perfect fingerprint proof surface for the black cabinetry or customising a butler's pantry to house both spices and tech, every decision was made to ensure the space functioned exactly as the family imagined.

Here's a taste of what to expect when working with Xanda:

• Open, genuine and collaborative approach to define your aesthetic and functional goals.
• Presentation of high quality renders and documentation needed to visualize your space before construction begins.
• Sourcing of the perfect materials and fixtures, from cutting edge surfaces to unique lighting solutions.
• Managing the details with cabinetmakers and builders to ensure a seamless installation.

In compact residential projects, the biggest challenge is often integrating essential utilities without disrupting the flow of the home. This space is a great example of how we approach high-density living by blending a full Euro laundry into a refined bathroom environment.

Our goal was to ensure the laundry felt like a deliberate part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. We designed a partition wall to create a dedicated nook for the laundry, using full height timber cabinetry to house the wash zone. This allows the utility area to disappear completely when not in use, maintaining the bathroom’s primary identity as a place for relaxation.

To keep the space from feeling fragmented, we focussed on a unified material palette. Notice how the matching laundry doors and vanity timber finish create a sense of continuity. This is supported by a consistent choice of metal finishes and the extension of the green subway tile into the laundry enclosure itself.

By using materials to bridge the gap between "functional" and "aesthetic" zones, the laundry becomes an integrated feature of the room rather than a hidden necessity.

There is something incredibly grounding about a kitchen that celebrates raw materiality. From the cool touch of the expansive honed marble benchtops to the deep warmth of the hand crafted solid walnut island and turned legs, every surface in this space tells a story of quality.

This space has been designed for modern living and contemporary workflows, yet it feels established, like it was always supposed to be there.

This sense of permanence has been achieved by leaning into the original features of the home. The rugged brick fireplace, ornate crown mouldings, and the unique quirk detailing on the pillars act as anchors for the new design. While many contemporary islands are sculptural or monolithic in nature, this island presents more like a bespoke piece of furniture. Its turned walnut legs and warm timber grain provide a furniture-like quality that softens the transition between the kitchen and the rest of the home.

The choice of living finishes, specifically the natural marble and unlacquered brass fixtures, is highly intentional. These materials are selected for their ability to patina over time, recording the marks of daily use and further enhancing that lived-in feel. Rather than resisting age, these surfaces embrace it, helping to tell the kitchen’s story for years to come.

How do you feel about materials that age with the home? Do you prefer the pristine look of modern finishes or the evolving character of a living patina? Let us know in the comments below.

✨ The Art of Material Selection: Terrazzo and Timber

This kitchen is a study in balancing function with tactile, appealing materials. The selections were carefully chosen to create a modern yet timeless aesthetic.

The Countertop Choice: The distinctive terrazzo benchtops brings immediate character and playfulness to the workspace, elegantly contrasting the simplicity of the white base cabinets.

Framing the View: Notice the subtle use of timber veneer within the integrated handle detail and the kickboards, this ties the upper and lower halves together, also enhancing the visual connection with the timber floor.

Hidden Functionality: By integrating the fridge and opting for flat-panel doors, we achieved the clean, uninterrupted lines necessary to make a compact kitchen feel larger an

Small but mighty! We designed this powder room and guest shower to be a textural sanctuary. The vertical kit-kat tiles in that gorgeous muted sage-green instantly add depth and movement, catching the light perfectly.

Notice how the tile follows the gentle curve of the wall leading into the shower? This architectural detail softens the lines of the room while functionally creating separation from the access to the water heater behind the door. Paired with the soft, warm grey floor tiles and gunmetal fixtures, it’s a small space that makes a huge, unforgettable statement.

Where natural warmth meets refined modern design

This kitchen was inspired by a beautiful piece of aboriginal artwork and balances rich timber cabinetry with striking natural Taj Mahal quartzite benchtops and a backdrop of matte black joinery.

Soak up the serenity

Imagine sinking into this sculptural tub as the afternoon sun streams through the skylight and a salty breeze drifts in from the ocean. The sound of waves, the scent of sea air, and the soft glow of golden hour... pure coastal bliss.

Hearing words like these from our wonderful clients is the true measure of our success. ✨

We’re so proud to share this lovely feedback from our Fivedock project. The vision here was to create a sophisticated, modern kitchen and open plan living space that champions texture and contrast with an industrial twist. We layered moody matte black cabinetry with the raw, tactile finish of microcement on the walls and the custom-made feature rangehood. Touches of oak and bronze hardware add warmth and an organic feel to this beautifully functional space.

Sometimes, the best design is about revealing what's already there. ✨

We are absolutely captivated by the heart of this kitchen – the magnificent original brick fireplace. In this project, our primary vision was to honour and celebrate the home's inherent character, allowing its history to shine through.

Our approach involved carefully restoring and exposing this incredible brickwork, transforming it into a warm, inviting focal point that grounds the entire space. Paired with a sophisticated matte black range cooker and elegant brass accents, the design beautifully balances the rustic charm of the original feature with modern luxury and functionality.

Where possible, we love to weave existing architectural treasures into contemporary designs, creating spaces that feel authentic, soulful, and truly unique.

What original features in your home do you cherish most? We'd love to hear about them in the comments! 👇
