Transform Your Bathroom into a Private Sanctuary
Ever wondered how to capture that Balinese resort feeling without leaving home? It’s all about the balance of raw, organic textures and bringing the “outside in.”
For this recent renovation, we moved away from the standard “white and bright” to create a moody, grounding escape. If you’re looking to recreate this peaceful vibe in your own home, here are three design principles we used:
1. Embrace Biophilic Design
Don’t just put a pot on the counter—integrate your greenery. We designed this custom-formed concrete vanity with a built-in planter. Using an integrated solution ensures your plants feel like a permanent architectural feature rather than an afterthought, instantly lowering cortisol levels the moment you walk in.
2. Texture Over Color
To achieve that authentic Wabi-sari aesthetic, we used Japanese Shou Sugi Ban (charred wood) for the cladding. The deep, velvety carbon finish provides a stunning contrast to the river stone basin. When choosing materials, look for items that feel “found” rather than “manufactured.”
3. Mix the Elements
A successful sanctuary balances the “hard” and the “soft.”
• Concrete & Stone: Provide the grounding, earthy foundation.
• Charred Wood: Adds warmth and a sense of history.
• Living Foliage: Softens the industrial lines and adds movement.
Design Tip: When using dark textures like Shou Sugi Ban, ensure you have soft, indirect lighting (like the linear LED strip seen here) to highlight the grain without creating harsh shadows.
