Some pieces stop you before you’ve even stepped inside.

These sculptural totems were custom made for the entry of this Chippendale penthouse by Sydney ceramicist Lia Klugman. She works in raku, a Japanese firing technique that incorporates horsehair to create those beautifully unpredictable markings. No two pieces are ever the same.

Commissioning something specific to a space rather than simply selecting what’s available — that’s where a home starts to feel truly personal.

The entry deserves that kind of intention.

Contributing my perspective to such a respected local staple is a significant milestone in my professional journey. In my articles, I draw on over 25 years of experience in high-end interiors to discuss the philosophy behind my practice creating ‘European-meets-coastal’ spaces that serve as deeply personal sanctuaries.

Interior design is about more than just beautiful objects. It is about how a home supports the rhythm of your life. Luxury shouldn’t feel forced, it should feel inevitable. Often, the most challenging part of a renovation is ensuring the new space looks like it was always meant to be there, rather than an afterthought. After all, if an outdoor area feels disconnected from the home, you simply won’t use it.
We bridge that gap by using natural textures and purposeful contrast to create a flow that feels entirely intuitive. This allows the transition to the poolside feel just as natural as walking into the next room.

Stepping out from behind the mood boards and into the frame... it’s been a minute (okay, maybe a few years)!
Relocating my practice from Sydney to the Byron and Gold Coast region has been such a whirlwind of discovery, finding fresh inspiration in the textures and light of the Northern Rivers. While my work is usually about curated spaces, today it’s simply about saying hello.
I am so happy to be here, connecting with local makers and helping clients create homes that finally allow them to exhale the moment they walk through the door.
