Paint Versus Wallpaper on the Ceiling : Which Choice Makes More Sense?

With 30 years of experience as interior decorators, we have used wallpaper on clients’ ceilings. While it is not for the faint-hearted, it is becoming an increasingly popular design choice.
For many years, ceilings have been an afterthought in interior design. Homeowners often spend time choosing flooring, wall colours, furniture, and lighting, while leaving the ceiling plain white with little consideration.
As design trends evolve, however, more people are questioning whether paint is still the best ceiling finish or whether wallpaper offers a more creative alternative. Both options have their advantages, and the right choice depends on finding the right balance between practicality and visual impact.

Paint remains the most common ceiling finish for good reason. It is affordable, widely available, and relatively easy to apply. A painted ceiling creates a clean and uncluttered appearance that works in almost any room. White paint, reflects light effectively and can make a space feel larger and brighter. This is especially valuable in homes with lower ceilings or limited natural light. Paint is also easy to maintain. If stains, cracks, or marks appear over time, touching up the surface is usually straightforward and inexpensive.

Beyond practicality, painted ceilings provide flexibility. Homeowners can change wall colours, furniture, and décor without worrying about whether a patterned ceiling will clash with a new design scheme. For those seeking a timeless look, paint is often the safest investment.

Wallpaper, on the other hand, challenges the idea that ceilings should fade into the background. Designers often refer to the ceiling as the “fifth wall,” and wallpaper can transform it into a focal point. A carefully chosen pattern, texture, or colour can add character and sophistication to a room. In dining rooms, bedrooms, powder rooms, and home offices, wallpapered ceilings can create a sense of luxury and visual interest that paint alone may struggle to achieve.

Wallpaper does have some drawbacks. Applying it overhead requires skill and precision, so we strongly recommend using a professional wallpaper installer. Maintenance can also be more challenging. If a section becomes damaged or begins to peel, repairs may be noticeable and difficult to complete seamlessly, so professional assistance is also best for any touch-ups.

The decision ultimately comes down to purpose. If the goal is simplicity, affordability, and long-term versatility, paint remains the superior choice. If you are wanting to create a memorable design statement and add personality to a space, wallpaper deserves serious consideration.

Rather than viewing paint and wallpaper as competing options, homeowners should see them as tools for different design goals. Most rooms benefit from the clean elegance of a painted ceiling, while select spaces can be elevated through the thoughtful use of wallpaper. In the end, the best ceiling is not the one that follows the latest trend, but the one that enhances the character and function of the room beneath it.

Powder Room Perfection

A powder room is the perfect space to make a bold design statement. The combination of classic shutters and beautiful decorative wallpaper creates a timeless, elegant look that instantly elevates the room. The shutters add texture, privacy, and architectural charm, while the wallpaper introduces personality, colour, and visual interest. Together, they transform even the smallest space into a stylish feature of the home.

Whether your style is traditional, coastal, modern, or luxurious, shutters paired with decorative wallpaper create a stunning balance of sophistication and warmth.

Art Deco Interiors

Art Deco is a sophisticated interior design style inspired by the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Combining lavish textures, strong geometric forms, symmetrical layouts, and decorative accents, it brings a sense of elegance, drama, and refinement to a space.

The style was heavily influenced by architecture, fashion, travel, and the optimism of the machine age. You’ll often see streamlined forms, metallic finishes, and statement lighting.

Art Deco was brought into the home through architecture, furniture, textiles, lighting, and decorative accessories. The style transformed everyday interiors into elegant and sophisticated living spaces.

Homes embraced Art Deco through the use of bold geometric patterns, rich colours, and luxurious materials. Curved furniture, mirrored surfaces, statement lighting, and decorative detailing helped create interiors that felt both glamorous and modern.

Wallpaper, rugs, and soft furnishings often featured striking motifs, while cabinetry and furniture incorporated streamlined shapes and metallic accents. Even smaller decorative pieces such as mirrors, vases, and sculptures reflected the sleek and polished aesthetic of the era.

As the style grew in popularity, Art Deco moved beyond grand hotels and theatres and became accessible for residential interiors, allowing homeowners to introduce touches of luxury and sophistication into living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining spaces.

Key Features of Art Deco Interiors

Geometric patterns : arches, sunbursts, zigzags, fan shapes, chevrons, and stepped forms.

Luxurious materials : marble, brass, chrome, velvet, lacquer, glass, mirrored finishes, and dark timber are common.

Bold colour palette : black and gold are classic, but emerald green, navy, burgundy, blush pink, ivory, and jewel tones are also popular.

Symmetry and structure : furniture and décor are usually arranged in a balanced, formal way.

Statement lighting : chandeliers, globe lights, and sculptural lamps are central features.

Curved furniture : rounded lounges, scalloped chairs, and curved mirrors soften the geometric elements.

It is a style that has never faded away but evolved. Contemporary Art Deco interiors offer a softer, more relaxed interpretation of the classic 1920s style. Today’s look often features neutral tones, curved furniture, metallic finishes, geometric wallpaper, and luxurious fabrics such as velvet and boucle. When paired with lighter textures, this style works beautifully in apartments, boutique-inspired bedrooms, and sophisticated coastal homes.

If you are trying to introduce the Art Deco style, there are simple ways. Art Deco styling can be beautifully introduced through soft furnishings and wall finishes, adding elegance, texture, and geometric detail to a space without overwhelming the room.

Choose curtains in luxurious fabrics such as velvet, linen blends, or soft textured sheers to create a refined and sophisticated feel. Rich tones like emerald green, navy, blush, black, ivory, or champagne work particularly well.

An Art Deco rug helps anchor the room while introducing pattern and visual interest. Geometric designs, curved motifs, fan patterns, and bold line work are all signature elements of the style. A statement rug can instantly bring depth and sophistication to living rooms, bedrooms, and dining spaces.

Wallpaper is one of the most effective ways to introduce Art Deco character into a home. Bold geometric patterns, metallic finishes, and textured wall coverings can create a glamorous feature wall or a dramatic full-room effect.

For a contemporary coastal Art Deco look, pair geometric wallpaper with lighter furnishings, curved furniture, natural textures, and soft layered fabrics.

When considering your homes style choice remember of the main reasons people are drawn to Art Deco is its ability to make a space feel luxurious without losing comfort. The style blends statement features with soft textures, allowing interiors to feel inviting while still looking sophisticated. A style that will continue to go for many years to come.

For the Fallen
by Laurence Binyon, 1914

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation,
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

How to measure your wall for Wallpaper or a Wall Mural

Measuring your walls for wallpaper is a simple procedure, especially if there are no windows or doors. However if you are wanting to wallpaper walls with windows and doors then this is the article for you. You will need a Metal Tape Measure and Pen and Paper.

Standard Wall (no windows or doors)

You will be measuring the Height and Width of the Wall.
Measure the Height: Measure from the top of the skirting board to the ceiling if square set, otherwise to the bottom of your cornice.
It is best to measure in 2-3 different spots along the wall. Not all walls are perfectly straight.
Measure the Width: Measure the total width of the wall from corner to corner. If you are wanting to wallpaper multiple walls continue the process and list the walls ie 1/2/3 or A/B/C.

Wall with a Door or Window
Follow the measuring process of a Standard Wall.
Draw the layout of the wall including the position of door or window. Measure the outer edge of the door or window to the wall corner. Follow this process for left of the door or window to the wall corner and the right of the door or window to the wall corner.
Now measure the top of the door or window to the ceiling if square set or to the bottom of the cornice.
As a check measure, remember to also measure the outside of the door or window width and height.

Wall with Doors and Windows
Start with the measuring process of a Standard Wall.
Draw the layout of the wall including the position of doors and windows.
Working from either the left or right wall corner Measure the outer edge of each door and window to the next door or window outer edge. Working your way to the other side of the wall corner.
Now measure the top of each door and window to the ceiling if square set or to the bottom of the cornice.
As a check measure, remember to also measure the outside of each door and window width and height.

Wall with a Pitch or Slant
Draw the layout of the wall.
Measure the absolute highest point for the pitch height and the lowest point for the secondary height.
Measure the width of the wall from corner to corner.
If there are any windows and doors, you will need to follow the measuring process as above as well.

This information is crucial for your Wallpaper Supplier when calculating rolls. Wallpaper by design is repeatable to cover your wall. However, a Wall Mural is like giant artwork and can now be custom printed to fit your wall.
For a Wall Mural you will only need to measure the Walls overall Height and Width. Remember a little more for trimming.
For Wallpaper Rolls you need to take into account wallpaper roll size and pattern repeat for matching. Online calculators are not accurate and do not consider offset pattern matching and alternating rolls. These are tricks of the trade to minimise wastage.

That is why it is important to consulate with your Interior Decorating Specialist.
