My bike and I are ready. I've logged 484 training km. My Oceans To Outback challenge to support Flying Doctor Service of Australia starts tomorrow. Across October, I'll be chipping away at my goal of 583km- the distance they flew my husband for life-saving surgery.

I'd love your support. https://www.oceanstooutback.org.au/fundraisers/CodependentCyclists

This looks like a perfectly nice dress.

Made a couple of years before we opened the shop. I've never worn it, and the slit is the reason why.

At 150cm I shorten everything. When I shortened this, I didn't think about what that would do to the slit at the back.

The top of it doesn't cover my bum.

(That's before we get to the darts, which aren't where my actual curves are, or the fact I should have graded between two sizes because I'm bigger in the hip than the waist.)

So we're having an evening about exactly this.

Friday 16 October, 6 to 8.30pm, at the shop. Bring two things you've made — one you're proud of, and one that went wrong. You'll spend an hour in pairs, swapping every seven minutes, turning each other's work inside out. A bit like speed dating, but to solve sewing problems.

Then we sit down and collectively brainstorm the ones nobody could solve.

If you fixed yours, bring it anyway and tell us what it was before. If you
threw it out, bring a photo. Nobody is checking.

Thirty places, $25, and every cent goes to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

There was a time when I assumed the Royal Flying Doctor Service was for people who live in the outback.

It was late on Saturday 1 November last year, and I was getting ready for Canberra Frocktails when the phone rang. My husband Matthew had fallen ill on a two-week work trip to Western Australia. While the RFDS flew him from Esperance to Perth for the emergency surgery that saved his life, I was at home scrambling for a seat on a plane.

You don't have to live remote. You just have to be somewhere remote when it happens.

This October we're each cycling 583 kilometres — the distance they flew him — to raise money for the RFDS. We're aiming for $10,000.

The whole story is here: https://weftandwarp.com.au/blogs/news/why-were-cycling-583-kilometres-this-october

Most "what you need to start sewing" lists are shopping lists.

Mine is shorter: two pairs of scissors, pins, needles, a tape measure that tells the truth, a quick unpick, something to mark with, and decent thread. That's what I sewed with for decades — I didn't add anything until I turned 40.

So I've written up the honest version. What to buy first, what can wait, what you can skip entirely, and a few things nobody tells beginners: why polyester thread is stronger than cotton, why a steamer won't replace an iron, and how to tell when your quick unpick has gone blunt.
