A mooditj morning of weaving 💜🧡 just a bunch of people coming together to tell stories and share knowledge with each other.. and to make some cute little baskets!!

This place holds alot of meaning to my family and I. Happy and sad. When I was little Pop showed us around all the old houses, the old dairy, the orchard and the dam. Now my kids are seeing it too.

Weavers like Julie Ashley do much more than just weave. They actively invite, involve and educate different community groups and generations in learning through the age-old craft. Today she had the pleasure of taking two young women out from NAAFLS.

“I don’t think I have the words to thank Julie for the experience she gave us today. It was so much more than weaving, we had some big yarns. It was about the connection, about going on country, finding the pandanus and she took really good care of us, such a wonderful teacher”, said Nykki.

Bernadette agreed adding, “it’s been one of the best days. I felt like crying because the experience was beautiful. Like, I was dirty as anything, digging in the mud (for brown colour) I just forgot what I was doing. We must have looked like clowns coming out of the bush, wet with bags of pandanus”, she says laughing. “Julie is really giving of her knowledge, she felt like an Aunty. I felt really honoured she was sharing concerns that we all face out in communities and talking about how as women we can help change things for the better. She told us what family means to her and how important it is to stay strong and connected to culture.”

Both NAAFLS’ ladies proudly made two sets of pandanus coil earrings each, and came away with a new respect and appreciation for the time, skill and patience that going into creating every piece.
