Subi Blooms - Projects like this remind me why we love floristry so deeply - the ability to create atmosphere, emotion and storytelling through flowers and materials. We are grateful for the opportunity and are proud of what we have created together.

This post however is to focus on the beautiful Australian and South African native flowers and botanics themselves, and recognise the wholesalers who supplied them, the people who foraged and supplied what we needed and the flower growers themselves. For without them there would be no ‘Rekindle’.

‘Rekindle’ - Yoshiko and my first collaboration has been an amazing experience from our first coffee together to our champagne toast at the end of installation at Subi Blooms. We’ve enjoyed creating our story version of ‘Flora Aurora’.

From redesigning redesigns, torching dead banksia branches, cable tying buckets, foraging, ordering flowers, selecting a fog machine, searching for music, choosing lighting to Yoshiko creating our stunning light sculpture, we’ve been on a steep learning curve.

And as the sun sets, ‘Rekindle’ comes alive. Wrapped in haze, ethereal tones, and atmospheric lighting, our installation took on an almost dreamlike presence after dark.

What you can no longer see in the details of the flowers can instead be found in the shifting light, shadows, and atmosphere.

The light sculpture designed and created by Yoshiko was the feature of our installation highlighting charcoaled native botanics.

starts tomorrow at midday through to Sunday evening 🌸. Come and say hi to Yoshiko and I and see our very first floral installation collab.

We are flat out today making it all fabulous for the weekend.

Our installation is called ‘Rekindle’ - a piece inspired by light as both a natural phenomenon and a quiet symbol of renewal. Think charcoaled logs and burnt forests, then picture fresh, green regrowth and blooms bursting with colour. That’s all for now. You can see ‘Rekindle’ irl on Friday from noon.

Subi Blooms is also open at night time with the installations being lit up by

Less than 5 days until the opening of Subi Blooms 2026 – 8th May to 10th May 🌸🌺🌼🪻🌻

Yoshiko Gunning and I are teaming up to create a floral installation at SUBI BLOOMS X GATHER, for this special Mother’s Day event by the City of Subiaco.

We have been planning for this event literally for 9 months and our structure is now complete ready for flowering.

This year’s theme is FLORA AURORA - think spectacular colour, fresh native flowers all sculptured into a glowing pinnacle. Subi Blooms is also open at night so come on down to see the spectacle.

Our installation is called ‘Rekindle’ - a piece inspired by light as both a natural phenomenon and a quiet symbol of renewal.

18 floral sculptures will be on display along with many other special Mother’s Day activities all weekend.

We will be at location No. 5, in the walkway of 500/505 Hay Street Subiaco opposite Denis Street.

Very excited (and slightly obsessed) to finally share this…

This years theme is FLORA AURORA - think glowing colour, layered texture and floral sculptures that also come alive after dark.

Just writing up my article for the winter edition of , reminiscing about the fun at the recent or MIFGS (I heard someone actually say Miff Giss onstage – such an Aussie thing to say!)

Our kids joined us and I caught up with flower friend Claire Mueller .FLWRS and saw her incredible installation, met IRL my FMA editor Debra Pemble and checked out Debs award-winning floral design creation. Reminisced with and swooned at the hanging installations, ikebana entries and the creative displays at the Growers Avenue.

If you ever get a chance to go, I’d highly recommend it, its great fun. See well known floral designers, make new flower friends, gain a lot of insightful knowledge and be inspired by the professional and student floristry design.

One of the best investments a florist can make isn’t in tools or flowers… it’s in learning.

I’m very pleased to have my latest article published in the Autumn edition of , titled “Why Every Florist Should Invest in Professional Development.” A photo of the installation we made at the Floral Vacay in January is in the cover.

In the article I reflect on the value of stepping away from the everyday rhythm of work to learn something new - whether it’s a local workshop, a multi-day floral retreat, or an international congress.

Recently I experienced both ends of the spectrum: a beautiful 4-day Floral Vacay hosted by , followed just days later by the international floral congress in Spain.

What I was reminded of is that workshops offer far more than techniques. They build confidence, spark creativity, and connect you with a global community of flower lovers.
