When it comes to heritage homes, the question isn’t should we change them? It’s how do we change them well?

Every Federation house has its own logic – in the proportions, the materials and the details. Before we design anything new, we spend time understanding what was there in the first place and why it works.

Good heritage design isn’t about copying the past or freezing a home in time. It’s about making thoughtful decisions that let old and new sit comfortably together, so the house continues to function for modern life without losing its character.

Council controls are part of the picture, but they’re not the whole story. The best outcomes come from clear design thinking early on, backed by experience and a strong understanding of the building itself.

If you’re thinking about renovating a heritage home and not sure where to start, this is exactly the kind of conversation we have with our clients every day. Get in touch and let’s talk it through.

Album of the week!
This weeks Album of the week goes to 2021’s Teenage Gizzard by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Known for their incredibly prolific output, they have released 27 studio albums, 64 live albums, 3 EP’s (remember them), 5 compilations, and 1 remix album so far.

Vinyl collectors also love them for their bold graphics, and who could blame them with fantastic album art such as this one. In terms of style, they are indie-psycahdelic-shambolic-garage rock in the same vein as artists such as Brian Jonestown Massacre, Beasts of Bourbon and The Cramps.

Despite the vast number of titles, actual numbers of albums produced is cottage industry sized, and collectors are know to pay up to $1500 for some of their more desirable albums.

A good introduction to their best work would be the song, and accompanying video of ‘Rattlesnake’ from the album ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’. ENJOY!

Renovating isn’t just about drawings, approvals and budgets.
It’s emotional.

For many of our clients, it’s happening alongside busy jobs, family life, financial pressure and big decisions that feel permanent. It can be exciting one minute and completely overwhelming the next.

Part of our role is to help carry that load.
To guide decisions, explain the implications, and provide clarity when everything starts to feel like too much.

We’re making these decisions every day – from structure and planning strategy through to materials, finishes and the small details that shape how a home actually feels. That experience means clients don’t have to hold everything in their heads at once.

Good design isn’t just about the final result.
It’s about creating a process that feels considered, supported and calm – even when the project itself isn’t.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the idea of renovating, you’re not alone – and you don’t have to do it on your own. Give us a call and let's talk about your project.

One of the biggest questions we’re asked is whether good design actually adds value – or just adds cost.

The reality is that the most important design decisions happen early, long before construction starts.

Things like how the house sits on the site, how spaces relate to each other, how light and ventilation are managed, and how the home might adapt over time all have a lasting impact on both liveability and long-term value.

Part of our role is to help clients make informed decisions early – it’s simply a matter of refining the design on the computer - when changes are still flexible and cost nothing, rather than trying to fix things later when they’re not.

The biggest problems often arise when changes are made during construction without a clear understanding of the implications for the overall design or the significant additional costs that can come with even small changes once a build is underway.

Good design isn’t about spending more. It’s about good planning and spending well – and making sure your home works for the way you live now and into the future.

The emotional side of renovating no one talks about.

Renovating or building a home is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.

There are hundreds of decisions to make, many of them unfamiliar, often layered on top of busy lives, families and work. Decision fatigue is real.

Uncertainty around timing, cost and approvals can add pressure, even when a project is something you’re genuinely looking forward to.

Part of our role is helping clients navigate that complexity with clarity and confidence, not just producing drawings. These are decisions we deal with every day, and we bring the right experience and contacts to each stage of a project – from engineers and consultants, through to materials, finishes and those smaller choices like bathroom fittings that all add up.

Good design isn’t only about the finished home.
It’s about supporting people through the process of getting there.

This week’s album of the week 🎧

Meet the Residents – The Residents (1974)

This one isn’t easy listening. It’s avant garde, deliberately strange, and proudly uncompromising – which is kind of the point.

The Residents formed in the early 70s and famously set out to remain anonymous. No identities, no faces, no backstories. Even the band’s name came about by accident, after a parcel was returned to sender labelled simply “Residents”.

The album cover is a spoof on Meet the Beatles, and if that wasn’t odd enough, the back cover features the band wearing prawns on their heads. Later releases would cement their legacy with the now-iconic eyeball masks.

Eclectic, experimental, and definitely not for everyone – but endlessly fascinating if you like music that refuses to behave.

Play it loud. Or don’t. Either way, it’ll make you think.
