2 Day Workshop

One of the most exciting elements of mosaic as an art medium is the ability to incorporate texture into a design.

Are you wanting to learn how to create texture in your mosaic art, but aren’t sure how?

This is the workshop for you! Learn about a variety of ways to use the design element of texture in your mosaic art with visiting instructor Margo Anton.

The class will begin with a lecture on the vast variety of ways to create texture and ideas for thinking outside the box with using common mosaic materials. Students will work on two small mosaics over the course of the two days, giving them an opportunity to try out more than one textural concept in their work.

Inspiration for these mosaics will be taken from photographs provided by the instructor (students may use their own 'Suitable Photographs') or it can be an entirely original creation of the student.

These two ungrouted mosaics will be created using cement-based adhesive and will be created on a 15cm x 15cm and15cm x 20cm wedi board substrates.
A monochromatic palette will be employed, thereby encouraging the focus to be on texture and tone to create the mosaic, rather than hue.

The materials used in this course will encompass smalti, stained glass, vitreous glass, ceramic, milifiore and more.
Students will be encouraged to use the common mosaic materials in new and exciting ways to achieve the textures desired. Use of the hammer and hardie will not be covered.

All materials are provided but participants may choose to bring items from home to supplement or support their chosen designs. Students should expect to leave this class with a good understanding of ways to incorporate texture into mosaic, as well as the ability to do so.

Morning tea/ coffee provided.

Building Better Backgrounds
(Beyond Opus Tessellatum)

Backgrounds in mosaic can be so much more than opus tessellatum. If you love creating the foreground of your mosaic but get stymied by the background, or just find mosaicing the background plain boring, this workshop is for you.

Starting with a mosaic grammar lesson, this lecture and workbook focused workshop will introduce students to a whole variety of possibilities for improving their backgrounds. Working with regular and colored pencils, students will explore these new possibilities on paper.

Topics such as using contrast, color, and various mosaic opus to create interest and emotion will be covered. Students will be guided as to how to make choices to create the most effective backgrounds possible in their mosaics.

Class participants are encouraged to send Margo photos of work either finished or unfinished, as the end of class will feature a discussion about potential background improvements for future work and possibilities for unfinished work.

This workshop will be of particular interest to those beginner and intermediate students who want to improve the design of their mosaics, particularly in regard to the background.

Morning tea/ coffee provided.

Micromosaics Pendants
One Day Workshop

Micromosaic items, including jewelry, have a long and illustrious history!

Learn how to create micromosaics in this one-day workshop using a combination of modern and traditional techniques.

The workshop will begin with a short lecture on the history of micromosaics, and continue on to discuss bases, adhesives, and filati, the Italian hand pulled glass threads made from smalti.

Designing techniques for micromosaic will be introduced and thoroughly explained. The cutting of filati will be demonstrated and practiced. There will be no instruction on the pulling
of filati. Students will work on a micromosaic pendant in silver plate and will create their own design.

Expect to receive lots of individual instruction as you work, and Margo will share lots of tips with the group as work progresses.

You will leave with a finished piece (or with ample materials to complete your project later) and with the knowledge and skills to create micromosaics on your own.

If you are wanting to learn a fascinating historical art form, want to add mosaic jewelry to your repertoire, or have an interest in learning to work in micromosaic, this workshop is perfect for you!

Students in this class will be provided with all materials to create their micromosaic.
However, if desired, feel free to bring any magnifying eyewear or specific tools such as tweezers that you particularly like.
