A couple of weeks ago I had the absolute pleasure of presenting to the Jimboomba Garden Society, kindly invited by Cheryl. 🌱
What a wonderful group of gardeners! So welcoming, kind, curious, and full of great questions. I loved chatting about mealworms, frass, soil health, and yes… the polite scientific term for insect poo. 😄
At JinsGrowth, we raise live mealworms as a sustainable, natural feed for backyard chickens, birds, reptiles, fish and other animals. What started as a small idea, we just wanted to feed our quails! has grown into a local family-run mealworm farm, and it was lovely to share a bit of that journey with everyone.
I also got to talk about mealworm frass through RichRoots Fertilisers, a natural soil amendment made from mealworm castings and shed skins. The shed skins are the secret weapon: they're made of chitin, and when soil microbes break it down, your plants think they're under attack and switch on their own defences. It's almost like a vaccine for your veggies, they build resilience before the pests even arrive. 🐛 Plus you get slow-release nutrients and a big dose of organic carbon to feed your soil life.
A big thank you again to Cheryl and everyone at the Jimboomba Garden Society for the warmth and hospitality, it made for such an enjoyable morning. I can't wait to see what you all grow this season! 🌻
