What kind of interior designer do you actually want to be?

This week on Turnkey Design Talk, I’m joined by Susie Ferreira of Casa Flair Interiors for a really thoughtful conversation about getting clearer on how you want to work — not just how you want your work to look.

We talk about one of those project moments that makes you stop and think: where does our responsibility as the designer actually end?

Is it when everything has been specified and delivered? Or is taking the reins, overseeing those final details and creating the finished experience part of what the client is really hiring us for?

It led to a great conversation about evolving your process, learning from the projects you’re already doing, and becoming more intentional about the designer you want to be.

Susie has also developed a particular focus on low-tox and wellness interiors — and she’ll be sharing that expertise at the Sydney Home Show this weekend.

What if having your home designed didn’t mean managing everything that comes with it?

No waiting around for furniture deliveries. No mountain of boxes and polystyrene. No chasing suppliers when something isn’t right. And no trying to pull the finished room together yourself.

That’s The Turnkey Experience.

We receive and store your furniture, check everything before installation, coordinate the moving parts, then bring it all together in one professionally managed install.

You get to step away while we take care of the details — and come home to a beautifully finished space, ready to enjoy. đŸ„‚

Because great interior design isn’t just about how your home looks.

It’s about how effortless we can make the experience.

Question for my designer friends- would you hire you? 👀

Something happened to me recently that made me think about this question — and, if I’m being fair, turn the mirror back on myself too.

As designers, we put so much energy into our work, our portfolios, our Instagram and finding the next client.

But what are we actually like to work with once we get them?

Because we can have the best intentions in the world and still be careless with someone’s time. We can be working like crazy behind the scenes while our client is sitting there wondering what the hell is going on.

This week on Turnkey Design Talk, I’m talking client communication, boundaries, the experience we create — and one very simple rule I use in my own design business.

And it started with me sitting alone on a Zoom call
 😬

Hello from Bali! A few thoughts as I put down the coconut and prepare to head back to reality đŸ„„

If you’re an interior designer and missed my chat with Mary Holmes from Mary Holmes | Melbourne Interior Designer | Decorator | Stylist , have a listen. Mary’s leaning into full service projects and thinking about stepping away from some of the smaller services as she gets more comfortable with that shift.

It got me thinking: it’s one thing to say we offer full service. But we have to know what that looks like from the client’s side, how to make it feel easy for them, and what we need to charge to deliver it properly. That’s where the confidence comes from.

Our conversation is on Turnkey Design Talk. Listen on Apple Podcasts or watch on YouTube — links in bio.

Wishing you a chilled and amazing weekend ahead!

What happens when you stop trying to do everything for one fixed fee? 👀

This week on Turnkey Design Talk, I’m chatting with the fabulous Mary Holmes from Proud Mary Stylist.

Mary joined the beta of my Turnkey Design Success System last year, and since then I’ve loved watching her business continue to evolve.

We chat honestly about pricing, moving towards a clearer full-service model, her latest turnkey project, getting comfortable charging for implementation — AND what she’s been doing to get more potential clients through the door.

And there’s a lot happening on that front! đŸ”„

Mary is wonderfully open about what’s worked, what she’s changed and what she’s still figuring out. I think a lot of solo designers will see themselves in this conversation.

Two busy professionals, two teenage boys — and absolutely no desire to spend their spare time trying to figure out their home themselves.

John & Linda wanted their Gladesville home to work better for family life, but still have personality, colour and a bit of guts.

That’s where I came in.

Thanks for the lovely words, John & Linda. ❀

Solo designer
is your service menu starting to look like a 14-page Italian restaurant menu?

You know the one.

27 pizzas. 32 pastas. Risotto. Seafood. Steak. Calzone. Garlic bread six different ways. 😂

Then there’s that gorgeous little Italian place with ONE beautifully considered page.

A few starters. A handful of mains. Three desserts.

And everything is bloody well done.

I can laugh about this because years ago, I did exactly the same thing in my own design business.

I kept adding services because I thought more choice had to be a good thing.

It wasn’t. 😂

I was confusing myself trying to explain all the different options — and, more importantly, I was probably confusing my poor clients who just wanted to know:

“Can you help me with my home, and how does it work?”

So eventually I nixed most of them.

These days, I really only have two clearly defined ways to work with me — and it’s so much simpler.

For me. And hopefully for my clients too!

That doesn’t mean every solo designer needs to have two services. Not at all.

But when you’re running a business on your own, it’s very easy to keep adding another offer because you don’t want to miss an opportunity.

A consultation. E-design. Designer for a Day. Full Service. Room Refresh. Colour Consult

Before you know it, we’re back to 32 pastas. 🍝😂

Maybe the better question is:

What do I actually love doing — and how can I make it really easy for the right client to understand how I can help them?

That’s what this week’s episode is all about.

DIY, BUT WITH A DESIGNER’S PLAN.

Not everyone wants — or is ready — to invest in a full turnkey project where we take care of absolutely everything.

But that doesn’t mean you should be left second-guessing every paint colour, sofa, curtain, light fitting and purchase.

That’s exactly why I created my Design Power Plan.

Your investment of time? Just two hours with me in your home.

We walk through your spaces together, talk through what’s working, what isn’t, what you love and what you’re completely stuck on.

Then I take it from there.

Within two business days, you’ll receive a comprehensive personalised PDF Design Power Plan including your colour direction, furniture and dĂ©cor recommendations, sourcing links, ideas for up to three rooms, trusted trade and supplier recommendations, and a clear action plan showing you what to do next.

Plus, you have one hour of follow-up support, which you can use in 15-minute increments over the following six months when those inevitable “Adam, which one do I choose?” moments pop up.

You do the implementing. I make sure you have a bloody good plan.

To the solo interior designer: a great discovery call should give you clarity before you ever step through the client’s front door.

What do they actually need help with? What’s the scope? What level of service are they looking for? And are you both on the same page when it comes to investment?

Getting this right means you can recommend the right service — and walk into the consultation already understanding the project.

In this week’s Turnkey Design Talk, I’m sharing 5 things to nail on your discovery call.
