In this video I am weighing out balls of clay.
Before I even sit down at the wheel, there’s quite a bit of preparation that goes into getting the clay just right. Even a brand new bag of clay is often too firm for the way I like to work, so the process starts by adding water and letting the clay slowly hydrate overnight. The next day, I pour off any excess water and leave it to rest in an airtight bucket, allowing the moisture to even out throughout the clay.
Once it’s ready, I begin working the clay by slamming and turning it on all sides. This helps align the particles and create a more consistent, workable texture.
The preparation here is weighing out individual balls of clay. By portioning them carefully, I can create consistent pieces and make matching sets when throwing.
In my next video you will see me wedging the balls to remove any air bubbles.
