A small home for this family of five but they didn’t want to expand, they just wanted to work with the home’s existing footprint. So it was all about finding nooks within and around the home to escape, read a book, doomscroll or just watch the sunset.

Using space well means you can build the best home possible for your big or small footprint.

Goldilocks Haus has been recognised in the 2026 GOOD DESIGN AUSTRALIA Awards, Australia’s longest-running international design awards, for excellence in design, innovation and impact.

This year’s Awards are presented under the theme Design that Leads - celebrating the critical role of design in navigating complexity, driving innovation and creating positive change.

At a time of unprecedented social, environmental and technological change, this year’s theme recognises that good design is more than an outcome, it is a powerful way of thinking, imagining and acting. It challenges us to question what is, envision what could be and design better products, services, places and systems for people and planet.

Among this year’s Award Winners is Goldilocks Haus, which received a prestigious 2026 Australian Good Design Award Winner in the Built Environment Architectural Design category.

We are stoked to share Donnington Ridge - an off grid, upcycled cabin on koala protected Kabi Kabi land - for the Sunshine Coast Open House in October!

Solar power, rainwater harvesting, passive design and sustainably sourced materials support a light footprint. Somewhere between camping and a conventional home, Donnington Ridge reflects ideas central to Maytree Studios: using fewer resources to achieve more, finding the floor area that is just right, and creating spaces that feel calm, grounded and deeply connected to place.

Wheelchair friendly! Bring your own picnic blanket and enjoy a snag and a moment on the hill with us! Link to book via our bio ❤️

Celebrating the seasonal change to spring and sharing these truly floral-garden-oriented images of Honi’s small footprint extension.

The Dahlia’s are all her, but some beautiful artwork and objects feature Louise Knowles Jess Sellinger Mandy Francis Mas & Miek Ceramic House Erica Gray Artist

In thinking about Honi’s home I went back and re-read our Return Brief. In it, Honi identified her top three success measures as being
1. Materiality & Texture - that her home has heart
2. Staying on/near her budget (which she did!); and,
3. Kitchen, Living & Dining are the hero spaces

Honi (Honey) is a project that we are proud of - small, but mighty, modern and feminine. Springing into Spring remembering this colourful home with heart 💚

It’s time to do a massive thank you post to the wonderful Kate. This absolute rock star has made the move to larger practice to spread her design wings on new types of projects.

We have loved working with Kate and over the years from fresh graduate, to registered architect to senior team member, she has always brought so much love and care to our clients and their homes. A thoughtful designer, her secret skill has been some of the hilarious project names she comes up with (we’re going to miss that!). Always the most stylish one in the room, she’s just ‘cool’ - a quiet achiever, an amazing listener and really clever thinker! We are going to miss ‘what if we flip it…’

Kate - you’ve not only been a wonderful ‘employee’ (that word still seems gross) but you’re a very good friend. Thank you for the years of care and friendship and laughs you have brought this place and best of luck for the future!

We love you Kate Stafford !!

The loft like parents bedroom tucks a small ensuite to one side and keeps circulation to a minimum in this small footprint home.

Dresser provides overflow for getting ready in the morning and bedroom connects via a bridge like link over the living room.

Top hung awning windows provide a breeze over the bed without losing privacy from higher neighbours directly behind.

Simple materials used consistently throughout the home provide a calm, united interior which works well in a small home.

Thank you for publishing our - this project speaks to so many of our values - adapt rather than demolish, improve energy, light and liveability, a generous streetscape, just what you need in floor area and a home that is as much about the garden as the house!

Taking this home from a 2.9 star, asbestos home with multiple issues to a 6 star home adapted for its next century (or more?!) is such a pleasure Thanks Lucy & Chris for being amazing collaborators!
