We've noticed quite a few new faces following along recently, so we thought it might be a good time to reintroduce ourselves.

We're Mark & Courtney, the husband-and-wife team behind Wicked Lights!

Nearly three years ago, we took a leap of faith and opened our little shop in Huonville. What started with hand-poured candles made in our kitchen has grown into a homewares and gift store filled with products from makers and small businesses we love.

And while social media often shows the pretty side of small business, the reality is that this time of year can be tough.

Winter in the Huon Valley has a way of slowing everything down. The colder weather arrives, the rain sets in, people stay tucked up at home, and the streets become a little quieter.

We had one of those moments this week.

The kind where you look around the shop, glance out the window at the weather, check the week's sales, and quietly wonder if everyone else is finding things as tough as you are. What keeps us going is knowing that every purchase has a ripple effect.

When someone buys a candle, a gift, a card, or a piece of homeware, it doesn't just support us. It supports the local artists whose work hangs on our walls, the makers whose products fill our shelves, and the little dream we took a chance on all those months ago.

Running a small business isn't glamorous most of the time. It's pouring candles in the kitchen, unpacking deliveries, cleaning shelves, late-night bookkeeping, paying invoices, and constantly planning what comes next.

But it's also helping someone find the perfect gift, chatting with familiar faces, meeting new customers, and watching this little shop slowly become part of the community.

There’s something about winter that feels a little quieter.

The streets are quieter. The shop is quieter. And for many small businesses, these next few months can be some of the hardest of the year.

Running a small business means riding the highs and lows, and winter is often when those lows feel longest. There are still bills to pay, stock to buy, and rent to cover, even when customers are few and far between. Behind this shop are just two people doing their best to keep a long-held dream alive, while also ensuring our small town continues to have variety, character, and choice.

Every purchase, every share, every kind word and recommendation means more than you probably realise. Especially at this time of year.

We are so excited to welcome the beautiful work of local Huon Valley artist .landgrebe into the shop ✨

David’s oil paintings capture the quiet beauty of Tasmania so effortlessly, from peaceful waterways and hidden inlets to soft coastal light and rolling landscapes. Each piece tells a story of connection to nature, creativity and place.

After years working in creative industries including sign writing, sculpture and landscape design, David has now turned his focus fully toward painting, drawing inspiration from the incredible scenery surrounding his home in Glen Huon. His work has a warmth and calmness that we know our customers are going to fall in love with.

Supporting local makers and artists has always been something close to our hearts, and we’re incredibly proud to now showcase David’s artwork in store.

These original pieces are now available to view at Wicked Lights Homeware & Gifts 🤍
