How to Keep Your House Cool in a Hobart Summer (Without Air Conditioning)
Hobart summers are gentle next to the mainland, and that is exactly why so many local homes struggle with the heat. Our houses are built for long, cold winters — sealed up tight, well insulated, often with big expanses of glass facing the afternoon sun. Come January, those same strengths work against you.
The good news is that you do not need air conditioning to fix it. You need to deal with the sun before it becomes stored heat inside the house. If you would like the short version of which furnishings suit which room, our guide to the best blinds for sunlight control in Hobart covers the comparisons.
Why Tasmanian homes overheat in summer
Most of the heat that builds up in a Hobart living room on a hot day does not come through the walls or the roof. It comes through the glass. Sunlight passes through the window, lands on floors, furniture and walls, and those surfaces then release heat into the room.
