We had these two gorgeous Kookaburras visit in our backyard this afternoon. We hear them multiple times a day in a tree close by but we don’t often see them in our yard so it was a lovely surprise. Tricky to get good photos as they were up high and the sky was white but you get the gist of their cuteness hopefully!!

Here’s a few more shots of the gorgeous juvenile kookaburra we had visit in our yard the other day. It’s crazy how fluffy it is, especially in the photos from behind, just so cute!

Thanks to the lovely for guessing this week’s bird call! Kaele was totally correct in her comment on our reel posted a few days ago.

The curious sounds we’ve been hearing, that are very loud and go for a very long time, are juvenile kookaburras.

Today we got to spot them and watch their beaks moving as we heard the sounds to confirm.

The photos here show one of the adults in the first two photos and then the rest are one of these juveniles ‘singing’ away. You’ll see its beak is fully dark whereas the adults have a pale lower mandible. Its features are also not as defined and it’s a bit fluffier, with shorter beak and tail feathers.

There was definitely at least one more we could hear but it was not in eye-shot. We’ll upload our sound files to .bird.id as it seemed to be lacking the juvenile sounds and we got such varied, long recordings of them.
