“Survive and thrive” — 91.4cmx74.5cm

This painting was inspired by my encounter with a burnt eucalyptus tree at a beach in Coffs Harbour. The tree was heavily burnt and scarred by the 2019 bushfire, but somehow it survived. Not only that, it provided a nurturing space for other living things — like a delicate morning glory vine and butterflies. Australian nature is fierce, yet so resilient. I think the resilience of eucalyptus trees represents Australia’s spirit perfectly!

I’m trying a new technique of creating a chaotic background by pouring water onto a big patch of pure paint and letting the water flow where it wants. The texture this technique creates is incredible. It’s so fun and therapeutic to play with paint and water on a canvas surface — it pushes the limits of watercolor painting; it doesn’t limit one to a small size paper. The possibilities are endless with painting watercolor on canvas. I’m totally in love!

A lovely posy of freshly picked freesias was left at my door step by my kind old neighbour living across the street during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as Sydney was in full lockdown for more than 6 months in 2021.

He has a little garden in front of his house where freesias of multi colours are always in full bloom when spring comes. That little garden has always been a sort of haven, a comforting home for the busy bumblebees, the lazy butterflies and the cheeky rainbow lorikeets. Little did I know until that dreadful prolonged lockdown period that my neighbour’s garden also provided me with tremendous joys on my daily walk in the neighbourhood. He must have seen me pondering at the freesias blooming in his garden while inhaling their beautiful sweet aroma. Needless to say, I was over the moon when finding the posy on my door step one day.

When the lockdown finished, I walked over to his house and thanked him. I promised that one day I would paint the posy for him in return for his kindness. Three years have passed since that promise. I saw him last week, and was startled with a realisation that he has aged considerably. I suddenly felt this urge to paint that posy of freesias as if I would be running out of time. So here it is, for my kind old neighbour, who reminded me we would never lose connection with other human beings with a random act of kindness even when we were totally disconnected…
