It’s been two weeks already since I broke my ankle! Hopefully the next four go just as quickly, because not being able to do my normal daily activities is driving me nuts. 🫣😂

Continuing with my ‘Back to the Start’ series and sharing my early designs, this one was design No. 5.

It was inspired by a photo of a Welsh Cob stallion cantering through a paddock. He had a big, thick stallion neck and chunky jaw, and I thought he’d make a great design.

I had a ball making it, and it came together smoothly from start to finish. Thinking they’d always be that easy, I never made a template. 🤦‍♀️

The next time I made it, it took me about five hours just to get the pieces resembling the original design. Lesson learnt .. I made a template after that! 😂

Design No.112 - Thoroughbred self standing head

Designed by request, this one was based on a thoroughbred head and is one of the larger self standing head designs, standing approximately 28cm tall.

It became my favourite self standing piece as soon as it was finished. 🥰

Design No.4 - Mare and Foal

I saw the head design on Pinterest about 10 years ago, sketched out the idea, changed up the design of it to what you see in the photo and designed the foal to go with her.

I put them up for sale, and they were bought by a gentleman who asked me to back them on wood. He asked if I could add some writing in pyrography and stain the wood so he could gift it to his wife for their wedding anniversary. The finished wood piece is posted in the comments.

Throwback to 2023 when I was asked to make this ring holder for a wedding. 💍

The shoes were cleaned but left in their natural state, unpolished. 💕

Back to the Start - Design No.3 Gecko

This design was one that popped into my head one night, so I sketched it out on the concrete shed floor, found little bits of horseshoe offcuts that fit the lines and laid it out.

I was delighted with how it looked, but then realised my big mistake of doing it on the concrete floor. There was no way I was going to be able to transfer all those loose pieces to the bench and keep the exact shape that I was so happy with.

Glenn to the rescue! He said no problem, laid down on the concrete and tacked it together. I knew there was a reason I married this guy!! 🤪😂

Have to admit, the thought of ‘maybe I can just sit on Rosie’ has already crossed my mind. 🤣

Back to the Start

While I’m recovering from my broken leg, I thought it would be fun to go right back to the beginning of my horseshoe art journey and share my designs in the order I created them.

The owls were the first animal pieces I designed, following the loveheart sign I shared yesterday.

They were inspired by a little owl trivet I had in my kitchen. The trivet looked absolutely nothing like my design, but it was enough to spark an idea and get the creative wheels turning.

It’s funny where inspiration can come from. Sometimes it’s another piece of art, or an everyday object, even a memory, or maybe something I happen to notice in passing.

You never quite know what might trigger the next idea!

Back to the start, over ten and a half years ago.

These love heart signs were the first design I tried that weren’t just letters.

Having them turn out quite well gave me a good confidence boost to try other designs shortly after. 💕

Help and ideas required!

I have 6 or so weeks to fill with content for here while I can’t do any work in the shed. (In case you’ve missed the previous posts, I’ve broken my leg. 🫣🤦🏻‍♀️)

I have over 100 designs, and I’m thinking maybe we go back to the start and I’ll show two or three daily?

What else would you be interested in seeing?

This particular Welcome sign was made with Glenn’s help and is the very first piece I ever made from horseshoes. 🥰
