Years ago a friend and I had a white glaze. It was ok but we wanted it to be more soft and matte. We looked online and asked for advice and every suggestion was different. So we tried firing to different temperatures and swapping this ingredient for a different ingredient, and then another ingredient, and another. Just for a white glaze. Eventually we got a glaze we liked but we didn’t know why or how.

If you are starting out in glaze making or sick of the endless guessing and testing, come and learn glazing fundamentals with me in my new six week course: Make your own Glaze Recipes. We will run glaze tests every week so you can learn exactly what each glaze ingredient does and why.

Bookings are open for January 2023. Get in early to make sure you don’t miss out. For more info, head to the website via link in bio.

Make your own Glaze Recipes: 6 Week Course

Glazing can be a confusing and frustrating journey. Often we find a glaze recipe in a book or online that turns out different to the pictures. We are then left with a glaze that we didn’t want and don’t know how to change.

Come join me in my studio for a 6 week glaze course! The course delves deep into what glazes are and how to make them. You will learn how each glaze ingredient works, how to analyse a glaze recipe and how to formulate your own glaze recipes. It will equip you with skills and knowledge to make glazes from scratch in your studio.

Enrolments for 2023 are now open. There are two days to choose from, but with classes capped at 8 students, get in quick to make sure you don’t miss out!

Setting up your Studio Workshop

I’ve teamed up with and Craft Contemporary to teach a weekend-long workshop, Setting up your Ceramic Studio.

This workshop is aimed to equip budding professional potters with the knowledge to confidently set up and manage their own ceramics studio. It is geared towards potters who have taken ceramics lessons but have not experienced the ‘behind-the scenes’ of sourcing, recycling and firing clay. The workshop structure will cover:

Day 1:
Choosing an appropriate clay for your needs
Recycling clay
Firing clay
How to pack a kiln

Day 2:
How to program and run an electric kiln
How to make a glaze
How to find a studio space
Studio expenses

Ivory

A soft mottled beige glaze for those who like their tableware earthy and subtle. It also compliments the bolder colours of the Everyday Range, like forest green and terracotta.

Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for the release of sets: breakfast sets, mug, sets, and bowl sets in our signature Everyday Range colours.

I make functional ceramics. I love that my work is being interacted with on a daily basis. However I also love special effect glazes - anything that shimmers and sparkles. Sometimes special effect glazes are not suited to tableware, as they cannot handle the rigour of dishwashing and messy lives. That’s why I have two distinct ranges:

The Everyday Range is made for daily use and has glazes that are specifically designed to withstand the oven, microwave and dishwasher. They are gorgeous but also strong.

The Special Effect Range is full of crystalline and metallic glazes. They mostly consist of non-food related items such as vases, flower arranging bowls, oil burners and incense holders. I do make cups in crystalline glazes, but be sure to wash these by hand.

Sweetheart Vase in Bronze

The inspiration for the Sweetheart Vase comes from an art deco glass vase that my Mum bought in an op-shop a few years back. The flared rim and pedestal foot made me want to play with shapes with narrow bases and wide tops. I throw these as a cylinder on the wheel, then distort the shape by pulling the sides out with my fingers and pinching a little lip in the middle. Covered in bronze glaze, these vases are feminine but sturdy, and look beautiful with garden foliage.

The Sweetheat Vase in bronze is available now. To browse the sweetheart vase in other glaze finishes, head to the webstore via link in bio.

Process

Here are some shots of porcelain cups in the making last week.

I have always thrown cups off the hump. It's the way I learnt to throw, first in Japan and then later at . It's hard to get used to at first, but after time it becomes a very efficient way of making. You don't have to spend time weighing and wedging small balls of clay; your hands eventually learn how much clay to centre at the top of the hump. Its just a matter of repetition, and small cups are a great way to practice throwing off the hump.

Everyday Range colour mix

Following on from yesterday’s post, here’s an example of terracotta and ivory looking like they were made for each other. Ps they actually were made for each other; I specifically designed these glazes to go well together 👯‍♀️
