A lot of people ask what actually happens on the call before they book it.

Here's the honest answer — save this if you're wondering.

Most people don't know how Lathika Nair Design actually started.

I trained as an architect — B.Arch, University of Kerala — and spent eight years designing across India and the UAE, including work on royal courts and a presidential palace in Abu Dhabi.

When I moved to Melbourne in 2010, I realised what I loved most wasn't only the structure of a building, but it was how people actually live inside it.

And I noticed that, so often, that side of the process — interior planning, lighting, the small decisions that shape daily life — wasn't getting the same depth of attention once the drawings were done.

That's what LND was built around.

Not styling homes after they're finished — but sitting with homeowners at the planning stage, before construction begins, so every decision about how a home will actually be lived in gets made early and well.

If you're building your forever home, this is exactly the conversation worth having first.

There's a moment in every new build where two worlds stop talking to each other.

The architect finishes the drawings. The builder prepares to start.

And in between, the question of how the home will actually be lived in often goes unasked — not because anyone was careless, but because no one in the room was responsible for it.

That's the gap I work in.

If you're about to start building your forever home, this is the conversation worth having first.

Hello!

A quick introduction for anyone new to the page.

Save this if you're building and want to know exactly what I do and who it's for.

There’s one comment a client made that has stayed with me:

*"I wish I had known you offered this service earlier."*

She came to me when her home was already at the lock-up stage.

The structure was complete.
The walls were closed in.
The electrical work had already been installed.

It was their dream home and a significant investment.

As we worked through the design, she realised there were things that could have been planned differently if I had been involved from the beginning.

Nothing catastrophic.

But we did need to:
• Rework parts of the electrical plan
• Design around decisions that had already been made
• Accept a few compromises that could have been avoided

This is why I’m passionate about helping clients early in the building process.

Good design is about so much more than selecting beautiful finishes.

It’s about making the right decisions at the right time.

When design is considered from the beginning, we can:
✔ Refine layouts to suit how you live
✔ Plan lighting and electrical locations thoughtfully
✔ Create a cohesive material palette
✔ Avoid costly changes and missed opportunities later

The earlier these decisions are made, the smoother, more enjoyable, and more rewarding the building journey becomes.

If you're in the early stages of planning your dream home, I'd love to help.

This Is Where a Home Actually Comes Together

This is the part of the process people don't see enough of.Material selection isn't picking things that look nice together.

It's checking how a stone reads next to a timber tone, how a fabric holds up against the light in that specific room, whether a finish still feels right once it's scaled up from a small sample to an entire kitchen or living space.

Every material in a home is a decision.

This is where those decisions get made.

The Decision Everyone Underestimates

Window furnishings look simple until you're actually choosing them.

Sheer or block-out.

Curtain or blind.

How the fabric behaves in morning light versus afternoon light.

Whether it needs to soften a room or disappear into it.

These are decisions that shape how a space feels every single day — and they're almost always underestimated.

This is part of the process most people never see.

Even the Smallest Spaces Get This Treatment

Not every design decision happens in the main living space.

Custom spaces — a pooja room, a reading nook, a quiet corner — deserve the same care as anywhere else in the home.

Choosing the right window furnishings here is about getting the light, the privacy, and the feeling exactly right for what the space is actually used for.

No detail is too small to get right.

Watch This Space

Consider this your official heads-up: a brand new look is landing across every platform, one at a time — Instagram first, then LinkedIn, then the website.

Designed with David Hughes Design, the new identity is a proper reflection of the work — considered, architectural, built to last. If something looks a little different over the next few weeks, that's exactly why.
