Two Habitat colour ways, same Natural grade, same amount of character in the timber.

Canvas sits soft and mouse-brown, natural knots, a grain that stays quiet. Le Cru runs darker, mid-tone chocolate brown with dark grain running through.

Light changes both. In bright, cool light, Canvas holds its softness while Le Cru's darker tone can pull warmer. In golden hour or lamp light, that gap narrows and both colours settle. Worth seeing your sample in the room at the time of day you'll actually be in it.

Neither is the safer choice. It's about what your room's light does to it, and what you want the floor to say once you've stopped looking at samples.

Closeburn Ave has a curved ceiling running through it, the kind of architectural detail that could easily turn a room into a stage. Canvas doesn't compete with it.

Soft mouse-brown, natural knots left in, a grain that runs straight and quiet underneath. Habitat range, engineered European oak, Natural grade. The floor holds the line while the ceiling does the curve.

That contrast, straight grain against a curved roofline, is the kind of detail people notice without knowing why the room works.

Floors are usually one of the last trades in before handover. This year, that comes with a deadline.

Kustom Timber’s cut-off for an install before Christmas is Wednesday 28 October.

Order any in stock timber or cork by 28 October and our team installs before Saturday 19 December.
In stock ranges only. Made to order won’t make it in time.
One team measures, supplies and installs, so you deal with one point of contact and no extra trades.

Handing a project over before the break? Send us your handover date and we’ll confirm this week whether it fits.

T&Cs apply.

Not every European oak floor is graded the same, and it's worth knowing which one you're looking at before you fall in love with a sample.

Prime grade keeps knots and colour variation to a minimum. The grain reads clean and consistent, board to board, so the floor sits quietly and lets everything else in the room do the talking. That's Veneto from our Como range: light and cool, with grey undertones.

Natural grade carries more character. More knots, more movement in the colour, more of the tree left in. It's the right call when you want the floor itself to be the feature. That's Dakar from our Habitat range: a rich, medium-brown smoked oak.

Neither is the better option. They're just doing two different jobs. Timber is a natural product, so every floor varies.

See both grades side by side at our Cremorne and Mornington showrooms. Link in comments to book a visit.

Natural grade doesn't mean less considered. It means more of the tree is left in.

Le Cru is proof. From our Habitat range, here in our St Andrews residence: a mid-tone chocolate brown with knots and black grain running board to board. On paper, that's more colour movement and more knots than a Prime grade floor carries.

In the room, it reads differently. The darker tone absorbs the variation instead of highlighting it, so a Natural grade floor ends up looking more consistent than the grading alone would suggest.

That's the part a spec sheet can't tell you.

Cork has an image problem. Most people still picture the honey-brown tiles of the '70s. Our Artisan range has moved on.

Porto runs mid-tone and warm, the colourway you've seen through Moonee Ponds. Lisbon is also mid-tone, but with more surface texture, the one you'll see at Black Rock next week. Same 100% cork tile, same quiet-underfoot performance, completely different personality in a room.

Picking between them isn't about which is 'nicer'. It's about what the room already has going on, the light it gets, the furniture it's holding up.

Order a Porto or Lisbon sample and see which one actually belongs in your space. Link in comments.

This is what living with cork actually looks like. Porto from our Artisan range running through a Moonee Ponds living area, edge to edge, no bevel.

Most oak tones come off a standard run. This one didn't.

We developed the tone for Malvern Gardens with our manufacturers, specifically to match the cabinetry, then used aluminium trims to keep the transition between surfaces clean and deliberate. That's the kind of work that happens before a single board reaches site.
