Safety is not optional — especially when it comes to fine dust.

In our industry, I still regularly see trades grinding concrete, cutting MDF, or working around fine dust without wearing a proper P2 mask.

Concrete dust can contain silica, and MDF can contain formaldehyde-based resins. These are not materials you want sitting in your lungs.

When I first started in tiling, I remember people making fun of workers who wore masks. Comments like “man up” or “grow some” were normal on site. But the reality is simple: as trades, our health is our income. The moment we can’t work, the income stops.

Protecting our lungs from silicosis, dust exposure, and lung infections is not weakness. It is professionalism.

As business owners, builders, and employers, we have a duty of care to set the right standard for our teams. When safety is ignored and something goes wrong, WorkSafe, legal responsibility, and long-term health consequences can become very serious very quickly.

This is something I personally take seriously. Over the past few years, I have been hospitalised multiple times from lung infections, and it has made me realise how important proper dust control really is.

That is why we invest over $20,000 per vehicle into proper grinding equipment, H-class vacuum extraction, and dust-control systems. It is not just to protect our workers. It is also to protect the homes we work in, the furniture inside, and the people living there.

Fine dust may look harmless on site, but the damage can be permanent.

Wear the mask. Use the right vacuum. Control the dust.

Your lungs are worth more than looking tough.

WHY WE GRIND THE ENTIRE SLAB

On new builds, the concrete slab is rarely clean by the time flooring is ready to be installed.

During construction, the slab is exposed to:

Mud
Dust
Plaster
Paint
Silicone
Adhesive residue
General site contamination

If these contaminants are left on the slab, the primer, leveller, moisture barrier, or adhesive may only bond to the contamination — not the actual concrete.

That means the flooring system is only as strong as the weakest layer underneath it.

This can lead to:

Weak bond
Primer failure
Leveller delamination
Hollow spots
Movement under the floor
Manufacturer warranty issues

That is why we mechanically grind the slab on our projects unless the substrate is already clean and suitable.

Grinding removes surface contamination and opens the concrete profile, allowing the next layer to properly grip into the slab.

A flat floor is important.

But a clean and properly prepared slab is what gives the flooring system long-term strength.

At Studio Floors, preparation is not optional — it is part of building a floor system that performs.
