To be fair, I only put them online today so I can’t really expect an avalanche of sales. It would be nice though- just saying. But honestly, I did think they would change the world. 😂

when I started pottery all of 12 years ago, I would never have thought I’d be here right now. When I think about 15-year-old Adele there is no way that I could have even conceived that I would be making a business of being a creative - I didn’t even know it was possible! Back then all I knew was the illustrations and covers of records from my parents collection and thought “I wonder do that one day.” But not even knowing what ‘that’ was. But it was all I really knew of art.
Fast forward 2014, I teach myself how to throw on the pottery wheel. Everything was hard. Everything I made was wonky but I never gave up. Sure I had many tantrums over plates (rewind three years on my Instagram. Feed to see me drop 20 plates in the bin). Sure, after many-a market I swore I would shut up the shop go do a ‘normal job.’ But one thing for sure - I know I’m not made for normal. Making with my hands is the only way I know how - so I honestly didn’t have another option other to make a living from doing this.

I had a stall at my first pottery expo this year. I have been selling at Melbourne's premier design markets for a few years now, but what I experienced at the expo was dramatically different. So I wrote an article about it for The Australian Ceramics Association Journal for Australian Ceramics.

Have we normalised expecting handmade ceramics to be too cheap?

Why is one handmade mug $60 and another $180? Is one potter “overpriced”... or is the other simply not charging enough to sustain their business?

Not every ceramic business is built the same. Studio rent, kiln size, firing costs, materials, market fees, time, and financial pressures all shape the final price. Some makers need pottery to pay the bills. Others don’t.

The bigger question is this:

**Are we pricing pottery to survive—or pricing it to disappear?**
