What does it feel like to walk into a prayer room and simply… become nobody? No titles, no status…. just you, fully present in the moment. Peaceful and calm.
This was the concept behind my pro bono project: a Burmese Buddhist prayer room. I was drawn to the idea of blending traditional elements with a contemporary approach; without focusing on religious dogma, but instead creating a pure, calm, and zen space.
I’m sharing two versions of the design: the initial “dream” concept and the final, buildable scheme. The first reflects my vision without constraints of materials shortage and skilled labour, while the second responds to the reality on the ground in Burma today, where material availability is limited.
Some key design elements were considered, including integrated seating with storage and refining the existing narrow landing to improve accessibility; especially for elderly users.
I truly hope the project will come together smoothly, and that even this version can be realised with as few limitations as possible.
