The home office nobody planned for.

Turns out the lounge and the dining table have both been drafted into service.

If you are working from the lounge, choose something with a reasonably straight back, too laid back and your lower back pays for it by afternoon.

The dining table is usually the better option if you do not have room for a desk, just add an office chair that matches your suite so you can pull it out to work and tuck it away when you are done.

What daylight saving means for your lounge room.

The clocks might have changed, but the sunlight has not, and that longer, stronger afternoon sun can be tough on fabric and leather.

If you can, try to avoid having your lounge right in front of a window facing the afternoon sun.

If moving it is not an option, throw a rug over the back, it is far better to fade a throw rug than your favourite lounge.

If you have leather furniture, spring is also the perfect time to give it a proper clean and condition, to keep it soft and stop it drying out and cracking as the weather heats up.

The coffee table rule nobody talks about.

The biggest factor is not the coffee table; it is the shape of your space.

A square or round room generally suits a round coffee table, while a rectangular room suits a rectangular style.

The good thing is they come in a huge range of sizes, from a metre right up to 1.6 metres, some almost the size of a small dining table.

The next step is to think about function.

Do you want storage underneath, shelves, or just a clean surface to place things on?

I have chosen to buy a fabric lounge, but with thousands of fabrics on the rack, where do I even start?

The best person to answer this is Kathy.

The first thing to think about is the overall look you want.

Do you want something tailored and structured, or cosy and lived in?

Then think about how it will actually be used, day to day in family life, or somewhere that will not see quite as much action.

Once we know that, we can start narrowing down by texture, then by colour, and before you know it, a wall of thousands of fabrics becomes two or three easy choices.

Will it even fit?

Before you buy a rug for your living area, your hallway or under the dining table, there are a few things worth measuring first.

Do you want the rug to sit right under your furniture, or just touch the front legs of the sofa?

If it is going under a dining table, think about how far your chairs pull out and open, so you are not catching the legs on the edge of the rug every time someone sits down.

A few minutes with the tape measure now saves a lot of second guessing later.

The H2 dining chairs have just landed, and this deep green fabric might be my new favourite thing in the whole showroom.

It is not the most practical colour, I will admit that, but it is stunning.

What is practical is how they are built.

They lean back properly and they sit so well that you will not believe how comfortable a dining chair can be.

If green is not your thing, they come in a full range of colours, and in leather too.

If you are renovating or building, timing your furniture order matters more than people expect.

Buy too early, and you risk measuring for a house that does not exist yet.

Buy too late, and you could be left waiting months with an empty room.

Most of our custom furniture takes around four to six months to arrive, since a lot of it is manufactured overseas before it makes its way here.

The ideal approach is to order before you actually need it, and if it arrives early, we will store it free of charge short term until your home is ready.
