Pappa Sven is a Scandinavian homewares store, located in the beautiful city of Newcastle, Australia. I fell in love with EVERYTHING about Scandinavia during a recent 10 month experience living in Skelleftea, in the very North of Sweden, and am passionate about bringing a small piece of this back to Australia. This experience, combined with my Textile Science degree and a long love of natural fibres and fabrics seems like the perfect combination for starting Pappa Sven.

Pappa Sven all started 14 years ago with a 1 year adventure living in Skellefteå, in the very north of Sweden. This morning I jumped on my bike, and the love affair with the beautiful city of Stockholm came rushing back. I wound my way through the city to visit our very special supplier, Swedish designers A World of Craft and was overwhelmed with their collection of fair trade produced items, designed here in Stockholm. It reminded me how important it is to have shared values with our suppliers, and A World of Craft are the perfect example. Beautiful Eva took me for lunch at the cutest konditori in Sōdermalm, and then I found the Red Cross shop filled with pre loved yarn & knitting needles 🤩🤩. Back on my bike to K. A. Almgren sidenväveri & museum the most incredible silk weaving mil & museum with a fabulous exhibition on the women who have worked in the mill since the 1820’s . This was so magic! A lovely visit to Öjbro Vantfabrik beautiful boutique in historic Gamla Stan (the old town) and finally a picnic dinner on the inner city island of Skeppsholmen. Ahhhh Stockholm, I ❤️ you so much!

The most random things can happen when you’re on holidays! We got a bit bored of the rain by about midday and decided to get out our wet weather gear and ride our bikes to Vik, a village on the other side of the Sognefjord accessible by car ferry. We battled the weather, rode through raspberry & strawberry farms and arrived at this beautiful little town with the sun shining on us. We rode through the village to find Siri and her daughter dyeing hanks of wool in their front yard, only to find out that this was the home of MYRUDL AS . Siri & her partner buy wool from their local farmer (John) and drive it to Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk to be carded and spun. They then hand dye all of the wool using natural dyes such as rhubarb leaves, birch bark and indigo. Siri had a little yarn shop in her home which was just filled with the most beautiful gentle, fabulous colours that made my heart just burst with happiness. We came home & cooked salmon soup in our cabin feeling so grateful for such a special day!

We have 2 places left for our Pappa Sven Knitting retreat on Sunday, September 6th. Our fabulous knitting teacher Valerie (who is also available for knitting assistance every Tuesday afternoon at ) will be teaching the basics of lace & cable stitches to create the Laurelette Mini Scarf, Designed by Courtney McFarland (Each participants will receive an individually purchased copy of the pattern) using our Finnish Vuonue yarn. Helene & I will also be designing an authentic Nordic lunch to enjoy during the day. Bookings are available via our website.

We spent the past 4 days hiking the incredible Aurlandsdalen trail from Finse to Flåm staying at the Norwegian Trekking Association Huts along the way. It was so special finishing each days walk at a new hut and entering into the beautiful cosy cabins filled with Norwegian handcrafts, home made meals and fellow hikers knitting , reading and playing music. The landscape ranged from harsh mountain terrain down into the lush valley of the fjord where we found wild strawberries & the most beautiful flowers, which I can’t wait to turn into a stitching project! A truly fantastic experience to have been so immersed in Norway’s environment, outdoor lifestyle & some wild weather along the way! Thank you to Den Norske Turistforening / DNT Geiterygghytta DNT Aurlandsdalen Turisthytte DNT Steinbergdalshytta for an amazing experience! (And of course our trusty Fjällräven gear was perfect for the trip)
