The Vatican displays these spectacular Turtini (or Pukumani poles) from the Tiwi islands in its museum in Vatican City (Rome). Tiwi perform Pukumani ceremonies after a death as a way to celebrate the lives of their loved ones. The poles displayed here were produced for a Tiwi funeral ceremony in the early 1900s and refer to the cycle of life, death and rebirth. As Paddy Freddy explains, "Pukumani decorations on posts represent people". Once the funeral ceremonies are over, the posts are allowed to deteriorate. It is believed that those sculpted with a head represent women, while those with arms are men. A myth of the Tiwi Islands narrates that the first Pukumani ceremony was held at the dawn of time. A female ancestral figure named Wai-ai violated the law, causing the death of her son, Jinaini. The father of the dead child, Purukaparli, created the ceremony and from that moment onwards the dead would follow his son in the world of the spirits.

The design features pukumani poles on the front (cultural poles that are placed around the graves of the deceased in order to protect the passed from evil spirits) and circular depictions of a Kulama Yam Ceremony on the back.
