Top of Mount Batur! An active volcano in Bali. Last erupted in 2000 (she has erupted 24 times since 1800).
You have to trek through deep jungle in the night at least once, right?
Hiking up at night (early hours of the morning from about 2-3am) is beyond worth it to see the sunrise over the clouds from the top of an active volcano.
Bonus photo of me at Rock Bar, Ayana - I sometimes do regular things haha
1 1/2 hour drive from Ubud.
My experience:
I was staying in Seminyak & was picked up at midnight.
The drive for me was about 3 hours. The tour was just me + a super cool woman who was picked up from Ubud & our tour guide (3 of us hiked up together).
But i did an all nighter as in I hadn't slept in 2 days when I did it - I just stayed up because I didn't want to miss anything in my trip! Do not recommend! Haha
I also had NOTHING with me to hike - literally the day before I bought some shoes from a mall & some work out clothes- also don't recommend! Haha. The first time I wore those sneakers was to hike up the volcano!
What I would change next time - I'd stay a few days in Kintamani - where Mt Batur is. Skip the 3 hour drive before hand. Staying in Ubud might be okay- only a 1 1/2 hour drive would be more bearable.
I did my knee. Quite badly. To this day it's not right - proper twist and pop.
I got to the top - but the first few steps down I twisted my knee and couldn't weight bear on it.
Thankfully- there were some local guys up there on dirt bikes (2 wheelers just kind of around near the top).
Not part of the tour - I assume just local guys waiting to see if anyone would injur themselves:
To d**k them down the mountain for some extra cash.
Super smart. Love that. So yes, I rode down an active volcano at dawn on the back of a dirt bike, with a b**g knee that had swollen to the size of a balloon hahaha
The last time I travelled overseas- January 2020.
Overdue for another trip!
I plan to hike Mt Agung next trip
