Perth alfresco season: 6pm in February with the Fremantle Doctor rolling in 🌞 or 2pm in July with that mild winter sun on your back β˜€?

Honestly, this is the most Perth debate going. Summer evenings in Scarborough when the sea breeze finally arrives are hard to beat. But a still winter arvo in Canning Vale, jumper on, lunch outside? Also unreal.

The catch with both: harsh afternoon sun in February and that low winter glare slicing straight under your patio roof. That's when an alfresco goes from prime real estate to a write-off.

Our outdoor blockout blinds with zippered tracks fix both. Drop them down, keep the breeze, lose the glare, and your outdoor area actually works 12 months a year. Made right here in WA, measured and installed by our team.

So settle it for us. Summer evenings or winter afternoons? Drop your suburb and your pick in the comments.

5:14am. Your baby's eyes pop open. Sunrise has betrayed you again.

Perth parents, here's the confession nobody warns you about: even in winter, the light starts creeping through nursery curtains well before 6am. By summer? You're toast. And those "blackout" curtains from the big chains? They're 95% blackout at best. That last 5% is exactly what wakes a baby up.

A genuine 100% blackout blind with zippered side tracks is the only thing that actually seals the room. No pinhole halo around the edges. No glowing strip along the bottom. Just proper, cave-like darkness from 7pm to whenever your little one decides morning starts.

Lisa from Cottesloe put it best after we installed hers: "Finally getting proper sleep thanks to the blackout blinds." Her words, not ours.

If you're in Scarborough, Joondalup, Mount Lawley or anywhere in between and surviving on broken sleep, send us a message. We measure to the millimetre, manufacture right here in WA, and have the nursery sorted before the next heatwave hits πŸŒ™

15 years. That is a lot of windows.

Somewhere north of 40,000 if we sat down and counted. Every one of them measured, manufactured, and fitted across Perth homes from Joondalup down to Rockingham.

Which means the awkward arched window in your Mount Lawley character home? Done it. The 2.4m sliding door opening onto a west-facing Scarborough alfresco that becomes a furnace by 3pm? Solved it. The shallow recess in a Fremantle limestone wall that won't fit a standard track? We have a workaround for that too.

The benefit of 15+ years isn't a number on a website. It's the fact that whatever your room throws at us, we have probably seen it before and worked out the fix.

That saves you guesswork, return visits, and the 5mm measurement errors that turn a "blackout" blind into a light-leaking disappointment.

A Mount Lawley homeowner measured her own bedroom windows last month, ordered custom blinds online, and ended up with a thin strip of light running down both sides every morning. The gap? 5mm per side. Custom blinds, not-so-custom fit.

That's the catch with DIY measuring. It's free and it works fine if your windows are square, your reveals are clean, and you're confident with a tape measure. Get it spot on and you'll save a few dollars.

Get it wrong by 5mm and you're either living with light leakage or paying to reorder the whole lot. There's no trimming a blockout blind to size after it's made.

Professional measuring takes that risk off the table. Our installer checks recess depth, bracket clearances, wall material, and any obstructions before a single panel goes into production at our WA workshop. Right first time, every time.

When we'd say book a pro measure: bay windows, tiled reveals, older Perth homes with non-standard frames (looking at you, character cottages in Fremantle and Mount Lawley), or any bedroom where light leakage isn't an option πŸŒ™

Not sure which camp your windows fall into? Send us a photo and we'll tell you straight up whether you can DIY it or whether it's worth us popping out.

A 5mm measuring error is all it takes for light to leak around your blockout blinds at sunrise.

That's why our "quick measure" in your Scarborough or Mount Lawley home is never really quick. Customers open the door expecting a tape measure and a thirty-second visit. An hour later, we're still on the floor with fabric swatches spread out.

Here's what actually happens in that hour:

We laser-measure the recess depth (not just width and height). We check whether your window is square, because Perth homes built across different decades rarely are. We talk through light direction, afternoon sun load, and which rooms cop the worst of it. Then we match fabric weight and colour to the job, and build your quote on the spot.

That's the difference between a blind that fits and a blind that blocks light at 5:14am in summer. Fifteen years of doing this in Perth has taught us the shortcuts aren't worth taking.

Book your free in-home consultation when you're ready. Bring the questions. We'll bring the laser.

Custom roller blinds in Perth sit between $150 and $450 per blind. That's the honest range, not a "from $99" headline that balloons once you're on the quote.

Three things move the number:

Fabric grade. A basic light-filter sits at the bottom of the range. A premium 100% blockout with proper coating sits at the top. Worth it in a west-facing Scarborough bedroom, overkill for a hallway.

Window count. A single laundry window costs more per blind than a full home fit-out in Canning Vale. Once our installer is on site, each extra blind gets cheaper.

Installation complexity. Standard recess in a newer build is quick. Heritage Mount Lawley cottages with out-of-square reveals take longer, and we'd rather measure twice than have a 5mm gap leaking light at 5:14am.

Every blind is cut and made here in Perth, so you're not waiting six weeks for a container. Want the real number for your place? Send through your window count and we'll come measure up. 🏠

Two houses on the same Scarborough street. Same roller blind colour. Same "blockout" label on the fabric.

At 5:30am in February, one bedroom is properly dark. The other has a glowing orange rectangle around the window and a 4cm strip of sun across the bed.

The fabric wasn't the problem. Both rooms had a genuine 0% openness blockout fabric doing exactly what the label promised. The difference was everything around the fabric.

Without side channels locking in the edges, a 40-degree Perth summer morning pours light in from the top, the bottom, and both sides of the blind. The fabric can be rated 100% blockout and the room will still be lit up like a servo at sunrise. That's the bit most buyers only find out after the install.

A true blackout result needs the fabric AND a track-guided system. Fully sealed sides, a cassette at the top, and a blind cut to the exact millimetre of your window. Miss any one of those and you've bought an expensive dim-out.

We re-install blinds bought elsewhere every week. Scarborough, Hillarys, North Coogee. Almost always the same story: good fabric, no side channels, light everywhere.

If your "blockout" blind isn't holding the dark at 5:30am, send us a message and our Perth team will come measure up. Free measure and quote, no pressure to decide on the day.

Ever walked into a friend's place in Scarborough and noticed the roller blinds just look... off? Bulky at the top, wrong shade of white, chrome chain clashing with warm timber frames. The blinds themselves aren't cheap, but the finished result sure looks it.

After 15+ years installing roller blinds across Perth, we see the same three mistakes again and again. Fix these and your blinds disappear into the room the way they should.

Swipe through for the three things most homeowners get wrong:

1. Mounting inside a shallow recess (under 70mm) so the roll sits proud and bulky
2. Choosing fabric from a screen instead of holding a sample against your wall in Perth's natural light
3. Ignoring the cassette and chain colour, the small details that scream "rushed install"

Good roller blinds shouldn't be the first thing you notice when you walk into a room. You should notice the light, the space, the view. If yours are stealing the show for the wrong reasons, one of these three is usually why.

44 minutes. That's how much quality sleep the average adult loses every night to light exposure in the bedroom, according to recent sleep research.

Multiply that across a week and you're down five hours. A month? Nearly a full night of sleep, gone.

Perth makes this worse than most cities. Summer sunrises hit before 5:15am, and even the glow from a streetlight in Scarborough or Mount Lawley is enough to suppress melatonin and keep your brain in a lighter sleep stage.

Swipe through to see what the research actually measured, and why "I've gotten used to it" isn't quite true.

Your bedroom should be the one room that fully works for you. We've been making sure of that for Perth homes for over 15 years πŸŒ™

"Cassette" sounds like something from a 1990s stereo. On your quote, it means something very different.

It's the enclosed box at the top of your blind that houses the fabric roll. Open-roll blinds leave that roll exposed. A cassette seals it inside a powdercoated housing, and in a Perth west-facing room, that housing is doing more work than it looks.

Here's why it matters in WA specifically. A west-facing bedroom in Canning Vale cops direct afternoon sun straight onto the top of the blind for three to four hours a day, most of the year. Leave the fabric roll exposed up there and you're baking the tightly-wound layers of blockout fabric that only unroll in winter. Two summers in, the top metre of that fabric has faded a shade lighter than the bottom, and the coating that gives you the 100% blockout rating has started to break down where it copped the most UV.

A cassette headrail shields the roll from that direct exposure. Same fabric, same window, dramatically longer life on the blockout performance you actually paid for.

It also seals the top of the blind against light leak. Open-roll blinds let a thin strip of sunrise straight over the top of the fabric. A cassette closes that gap, which is why every 100% blackout blind we make in our Perth workshop comes with one as standard, not as an upgrade.

If a quote you're comparing lists "open roll" or leaves the headrail off the spec sheet, that's worth asking about before you sign.

Book a free measure and quote with our Perth team and we'll walk you through the spec on your actual windows.
