A fabulous large Victorian pine sideboard in today. These earlier pine sideboards are becoming scarce and is one of the longest we have had in a while. It's original faux grain finish still evident on the door internals and exterior has been stripped and waxed. A great practical addition to the kitchen or lounge.

A trunk once belonging to S20206 Captain Barton Feltham Hopkins, who was a 41 year old from Glen Osmond, South Australia when he joined the Army on 10th April 1940. He was serving with the 27th battalion when he was demobilised on 12th Dec 44. Barton was a prominent figure in Adelaide's rowing history, and the attached portrait is one of 86 others displayed on an honour board showing members of the Adelaide Rowing Club who enlisted for WW2.
Pine dovetailed construction with original dark green paint and wonderful hand painted lettering. If only this one could talk.

Happy Wednesday all. I hope everyone had a great regatta day long weekend. Kicking off our week with this great set of victorian cast iron lacework. Original pieces are becoming scare, and large sets like this rarely become available. It is a quite common pattern for the time, and you will soon spot it adorning the verandahs of houses in Hobart's older suburbs.

10 x Corner Brackets
13 x Larger Upper Sections
11 x Lower Narrow Sections
+ various bits.
Roughly fitting a 12m verandah with 6 posts.

Two rather large late 19th/early 20th century wicker mill baskets now in store. Both identical with rope handles to the sides, iron strap hardware and timber braces inscribed 'Paynes Bon Marche'.

680d x 1040w x 760h
$650each

Paynes Bon March was founded c1875 by Mr John Payne in a single fronted shop in Fitzroy
Melbourne. By 1930 there were several outlets Australia wide, employing over 500 staff and another
150 indirectly in the factories and workshops, which is most likely where these baskets would have
originated, used to hold textiles, wool, etc. One of the mother shops was in Bourke St, Melbourne
and had numerous departments including manchester, chemist, crockery/cutlery, electrical goods,
Furniture, hardware/paint, jewellery, mens & ladies clothing, a hairdressing salon and restaurant.
The 1962 credit squeeze marked the beginning of the decline of city department stores and all
Paynes outlets were closed by 1996.

New in store this morning is this primitive, scratch built cupboard made from a pine shipping crate and gum planks for shelves. Found in an outbuilding of an early Huon Valley property where it most likely hadn't moved since ts construction in the 1920s. The small shed was a stones throw from the main house and was used solely for food prep & storage. A central pine butchers table, various bush carpentry tables along the walls holding separator parts, butter churns, mincers, repurposed tea tins containing god knows what, and some small meat safes. In the far corner, this cupboard was loaded with preserving jars of every kind dating from the late 1800s to 1960s. A wonderful snapshot of the time. Ideally, it would be great for these buildings to remain this way, but unfortunately, it's not always possible, and the resident possums were much happier with extra space
