Welcome to our "Shop in The Bush" on the magical East Coast of Tasmania. We've specialised in a unique range of vintage jewellery + antiques since 1982.

A rather unusual bird has found its way to The Shop in the Bush! 🌿

This woven cassowary figure comes from Papua New Guinea and dates to around 1970.

Cassowaries hold an important place in the traditional cultures of Papua New Guinea, particularly in the Sepik River region, where their imagery, feathers and bones have long featured in ceremonial and decorative objects.

Standing 40cm high, this figure has been crafted from traditional woven materials and natural dyes - a fascinating piece with a rich cultural connection.

A curious little piece of Australian medical history... 💡

Dating to around 1900, this Elliot’s Eucresol Lamp was designed to vaporise a medicated liquid, which could then be inhaled as a treatment for respiratory complaints.

Made in Australia for Elliotts and Australian Drug Ltd in Sydney, it’s a fascinating reminder of just how different home remedies looked more than a century ago!

Standing 16.5cm high, this unusual find is yours for $155.

Well, you certainly don’t see one of these every day... 👀

This antique basket has been made from an armadillo shell, complete with a red fabric drawstring lining - a fascinating example of the unusual curiosities and decorative pieces created in another era.

Measuring approximately 23cm x 21cm, it’s rare, wonderfully eccentric and quite the conversation starter.

Still stitching after more than 125 years! 🧵

This beautiful pre-1900 Singer sewing machine is hand operated, fully functional and, in Ben’s words, “works like a charm!”

A very usable antique for someone who’d love to put a little piece of history back to work.

A little colour from one of Australia’s studio glass artists. 🌈

This signed piece is by Australian glass artist Gerry Reilly, known for his distinctive work produced through The Melting Pot Glass Studio.

Standing 10.75cm high, it still retains its original tags connecting it to the artist and studio. Rich in colour and completely individual, it’s a great example of contemporary Australian studio glass.

A glimpse into the material culture of Papua New Guinea.

Our collection includes a number of traditional masks and axes, each with its own distinctive form and history.

Among them is this ceremonial axe from the Mount Hagen region, dating to around 1970. Ceremonial axes were important objects of display and exchange, valued for their cultural significance as well as their practical form.

At 58cm x 39.5cm, this is a substantial and striking piece.

The Mount Hagen Ceremonial Axe is available for $450.

A little appreciation for our local artists today! 🎨🌊

We're lucky to have some incredible creative talent here on Tasmania's East Coast, and one artist whose work we love is Belinda Volkmer.

Her coastal paintings capture so much of what we love about living by the sea, and we're lucky enough to have this piece in store at The Shop in the Bush.
