Bashiri West African Galleria believes in authentic hand crafted products that reflect the history and culture of West African life. All our imports are carefully chosen by Bashiri Director Simon Fraser - travelling annually to West Africa for 15 years, Simon has built strong relationships with local artists & crafts people , all of whom we support at Fair Trade conditions. Our Galleria in St Kilda is Australia's only dedicated West African showroom with a huge array of traditional artefacts, textiles, jewellery, home wares and more. Bolga baskets, hats and fans, made for everyday use.
Woven from strong, durable elephant grass, a natural fibre that can be reshaped when wet. Over time, the grass naturally softens and develops a deeper, warmer character, giving each piece its own patina.

There's a lot of time in a basket, and more again in the big ones. Agana, one of our weavers, says once the base is done you can't hold them like the smaller ones anymore, so you squat down and keep going. These are some of the largest baskets our weavers make.

A brand new shape for Bashiri, with a vase-like form and flowing curves woven right through the basket.
The pattern is worked on a larger scale than any other basket in our range, and it takes a very experienced weaver to achieve.

Welcome to Amorbisi.
In Ghana's Upper East Region, just outside Bolgatanga, it's part of a landscape of open savannah, red earth, shea trees, baobabs and long grasses. This is northern Ghana, much closer to Burkina Faso than to Ghana's tropical coastline.
The region has a hot, dry climate for much of the year, with temperatures reaching around 40°C in the hottest months. Then the rains arrive, turning everything green almost overnight.
Across the Upper East, natural materials are used to make baskets, hats, leather goods, pottery and textiles. In Amorbisi, elephant grass is split, prepared and woven by hand to create the baskets that have become synonymous with Bolgatanga.
This is where some of our Bashiri baskets begin.
