Dip_in_the_culture design - OMOTESANDO Yakiniku in the heart of North Sydney - Miller Street, North Point - for Interior Life.

Our design tells the story of a tree-lined boulevard in Tokyo - Omotesando.
The geometric arches and seating niches rhythmically envelope the entire interior. Heart of the restaurant - the kitchen - is designed in the form of the chute, dressed in deeply rust corten steel. Its position is particularly important as allows the work of master-chefs slicing the precious pieces of goods for traditional Japanese yakiniku bbq to be seen from every angle. The minimalism of the interior has been achieved using few basic materials - raw blackbutt wood, concrete, corten steel, gray leather and... amber light illumination.
For busy Sydneysiders Omotesando equaled with balance, calmness, zen…

Harley Johnston enriched our design with the graphics on Noren Flags and internal curtains and… got awarded the ‘TDC68 - Certificate of Typographic Excellence' from the Type Directors Club of New York. More to read in the attached link.

Dip_in_culture_design ;-) BANG BANG - once upon a time the icon of Sydney's largest little lane - Steam Mill Lane in Darling Square.
We sketched with Interior Life - Tomas Scerbo and Harley Johnston Tokyo Downtown Izakaya - the time travel of Japan. “We feel like home” could be heard from many Japanese visiting the place; when they entered, they stayed for hours...

It was my favorite project, where the spirit of Japanese culture was felt in every corner, taste and flavour.
The space lured with mystery and symbolism. Not only was the kitchen of Kokubo Yuji, ex-chef of Nobu Tokyo, hot as hell, but also the graphics that made the project stylistically and ideologically completed.
Sagamotu Ryoma's gaze at the logo seal, the bullets-shot rusty facade, the lights of original street signs and lanterns, sushi & sake bar, washed in neon lights… All had its place and purpose.
Harley Johnston has been awarded by AGDA 2019 for the brand identity and environmental graphics and few others. The videoclip of Sydney local band was made in Bang, TV cameras liked this place for youth shows and Australian airlines was showing Bang as Sydney's destination.
The master kitchen and of course hand painted mural of Sagamotu on motorbike will never be forgotten…

Dip_in_culture_design ;-) - around 2017, when Anthony Bourdain was planning New York's first Asian hawkers village, together with Tomas Scerbo from Interior Life we've sketched an experimental mini Hawker's Village in the heart of North Sydney where three independent businesses - Thai, Malay and Japanese - came together. Under the designer's slogan 'we spark human connections', Hawker's Village has become a place of long queues for authentic Asian cuisine and 'loosening the ties' spot during the lunch break. Long remembered is our 'disturbing design' and Ramen tonkotsu from Hakata, till now some of the best bowl of Japanese soup in Sydney. You can enjoy the same recipie it in the next creation of Interior Life - Hakatamon in Darling Square. Harley Johnston was the artist behind the graphics, big part of the design narratives.
It was only beginning of our design journey through Asian cuisine culture and its expression. The next one are equally colourful and loved by people. Through Bang Bang to Tiger Lane in Canberra ACT.
