Hi, I’m Jen, from Jen Young Design - A sydney based interior design studio, specialising in residential interior design.

It’s been awhile, since we’ve posted so I thought it was time to reintroduce ourselves…

Over the past 18 months, I had an amazing opportunity with ; where I sourced dream worthy properties across Australia and Germany to raise funds for charities across the globe. It was such an incredibly rewarding experience and period of growth, being exposed and inspired by European architecture, design trends and craftsmanship.

This year I’m excited to bring back this wealth of knowledge back to Australia, and to refocus on the studio.

We have some exciting plans for 2026 which we’ll share over the coming months. In the meantime, if you’ve been thinking about renovating, building, or reimagining your space, we’d love to connect!

Laundry’s are often overlooked when designing a home. But a well-designed laundry space turns the most mundane chore into a moment of calm. Think clean lines, natural lighting, and plenty of storage and work space. Our Laurel Abode laundry is a place where function meets beauty.

Choosing the right windows for your home can make a big difference in how you feel in a space. Window selections should combine both aesthetic beauty and functionality to create a unique and inviting atmosphere.

In our 'Laurel Abode' project, the introduction of a vast floor-to-ceiling picture window adds plenty of natural light in the kitchen and dining space, whilst conveniently framing the new pool to draw you outside to the alfresco area.

As shared in our recent feature, this was very intentional to capture as much light as possible and allow the parents to see the kids in the pool whilst they are cooking.

An inviting pool design can transform an outdoor space into a luxurious oasis for relaxation and entertainment.

Having small children, a pool was at the top of the list for the owners of our 'Laurel Abode' project, with the brief to make it low-maintenance and inviting.

The solution was a self-cleaning concrete mineral pool with deep steps along the sides for the kids to easily move around the pool. Whilst the selection of white mosaic tiles and marble pavers from , combined with a selection of low-maintenance plants from creates a tropical oasis with minimal upkeep, which means more time to spend by the pool on hot summer days.

When designing the main bedroom of our 'Laurel Abode' project, our brief was to create a welcoming haven for relaxation and rest.

Starting with a neutral base of Vivid White walls, paired with the natural stained Blackbutt floorboards, we introduced a colour palette made of Earthy tones and textures.

Earthy colours can evoke a range of feelings, depending on the specific hue. Browns and tans can bring a sense of warmth and coziness, while beige and khaki shades can make us feel grounded and secure.

This palette was complemented with layers of texture through the wool rug from , linen sheets, throws and scatter cushions from .threads and , as well as a combination of linen sheers and roller blinds from to add softness to the room, whilst blocking out light for a restful night sleep.

When the homeowner of this 1920’s Californian Bungalow in Sydney’s Lower North Shore first walked through the doors, they could already see it was brimming with potential. It was packed with character which the client wished to retain, resulting in a design brief that would welcome modern updates while celebrating the home’s period charms.

So while ‘Laurel Abode’ was given a crisp, contemporary refresh, it was important to have its period features be repaired and restored, from its quaint facade and ornate ceilings to the beautiful lead-light windows framing this original fireplace.

This fireplace was transplanted from the original dining room and now sits as the centrepiece of this newly constructed bookshelf in the family’s sitting room.

Reworking the design of the 'Laurel Abode' staircase in the extension allowed us to include a custom wine cellar that holds 330 bottles – an item near the top of the owner's wish list.

"With no space to store our collection pre-renovation, we used to ship it off to a managed seller," says the client to . "But with the new cellar, we were able to bring it all back home. We love nothing more than sharing a beautiful bottle with friends."

The cellar resides in the home's contemporary back living zone, together with the new kitchen, butler's pantry, and living and dining space.

Situated on a small block, the footprint for our ‘Laurel Abode’ project was limited, with the constraint to only expand the internal living space by an additional metre.

This small change made a huge difference to the living space, by offering more solutions when it comes to spatial planning, affording the family of five a larger lounge and dining solution to meet their needs, whilst still ensuring enough flow to move around comfortably.

Additionally, a seamless flow from the living area to the new alfresco space was formed, connected with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. This has allowed the living room to open up to the sunny, private, and green backyard, allowing the family to enjoy a wonderful fusion between the indoors and out.

'Laurel Abode' | As a family with three young children, the owner’s intention when purchasing this 1920’s Californian Bungalow was to transform it into their forever home, meaning both the home’s interior and exterior had to fit their lifestyle.

The brief was to create a seamless flow between indoor-outdoor, creating dedicated zones for various outdoor activities all throughout the year.

The large covered deck is perfect for year-round entertaining and alfresco dining due to the addition of the rain sensor louvred roof and side plantation blinds to offer protection from the elements, whilst still allowing natural light to beam through the house on winter days.

Throughout the summer, the kids can transition onto the newly landscaped lawn as it provides a flat area for picnics and ball games; whilst the inclusion of the heated concrete pool is ideal for cooling off and splashing about during those hot summer days.

When describing the design aesthetics of our ‘Laurel Abode’ project, wrote for how “the bright and earthy palette of white and oak with black steel accents runs throughout the house, enhancing the sense of space and providing the perfect backdrop for the owner’s collection of modern Australian art.”

"For us, art is what really adds colour and personality to a space," says the owner. "We can move things around and completely change the look and energy of the space."

We love working with our clients to hand-select artwork, as we believe they help to bring a home’s character and personality to life. Multiple elements come into consideration, such as the existing colours, textures and patterns of a particular space and, of course, a client’s personal taste.
