Thompson Street involved extensive alterations and additions to a substantial Federation home on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. While the original character of the residence has been carefully preserved, the rear of the home, pictured here, is entirely new.
The client’s brief was to retain the traditional architectural vernacular while introducing abundant natural light and creating connected, contemporary living spaces suited to modern family life.
Designing in this way presents a unique challenge. When heritage details and proportions are not carefully considered, additions can appear inauthentic, ultimately compromising the longevity of the home and its contribution to the streetscape. By respecting the original architecture while thoughtfully adapting it for contemporary living, heritage homes can continue to evolve and remain relevant for generations to come.
