I don't often find myself in Parramatta, but on Saturday I ventured west for the inaugural Parramatta Open, a one-day architectural and heritage event from Museums of History NSW and the first-ever satellite of Sydney Open.

Parramatta Aquatic Centre, by Andrew Burges Architects with Grimshaw and McGregor Coxall, was a highlight, a circular oculus pool sunk into Mays Hill to protect heritage sightlines, with an elevated promenade framing the view. Architecture-school theory, realised at full scale.

PHIVE, the award-winning civic hub and library by Manuelle Gautrand with DesignInc and Lacoste + Stevenson, had me sceptical at first (I'm not a massive colour fan), but its faceted red panelling is genuinely clever design, filtering light and anchoring the new civic square.

Also ticked off 6 & 8 Parramatta Square, Leigh Memorial Church, the restored Parramatta Town Hall, St John's Anglican Cathedral (the country's oldest continuously used church site) and the Sydney West Trial Courts.

Missed the golden ticket ballot for a preview of Powerhouse Parramatta, the $915 million museum opening this November, so I'll be back for that.

Parramatta is changing fast, setting its sights on becoming the centre of Sydney, geographically and culturally. Bring it on!

What a delight to hear Isabella Leber speak last night at Brickworks' inDETAIL International event.

Isabella shared insights from her Munich-based practice, Pool Leber Architects, and the way geometry drives their earliest conceptual thinking, with historical resonance, context and orientation shaping every project from day one.

The talk moved across three areas of the practice's work: villas, existing buildings and public buildings. What struck me most was the consistency, smaller projects get the same care and attention as the big ones.

Nights like this remind me exactly why I love architecture. Hearing someone speak about the connection between history, place and people, and what that means for design and community, is always a privilege.

Thank you to Brickworks Building Products for another brilliant event, and to Isabella Leber for making the trip from Germany and so generously sharing her time and insight.

Remembering Professor Adrian Gale, who passed away on 27 July.

Adrian led the School of Architecture at Plymouth University, graduated from the AA's renowned 1950 cohort, and worked alongside Mies van der Rohe in Chicago in the late '50s.

He had an amazing presence, he lit up a room the moment he walked in, and a teaching style that pushed you to seek simplicity with rigour and think about design as a whole.

His reputation brought some of Britain's greatest architects, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Ted Cullinan, through our studio doors.

Even years after leaving "The White School of the West," his influence never left us.
