Open the door and the room carries on outside.

The oak runs right up to the door frame. Past it there's the balcony, then the treetops, then the city.

The opening sits in a deep brick reveal, so the view gets a thick, warm frame around it. It's the same clay brick Mathieson used on the outside of the building.

Ariel Ophir-Verheyden led the project at Mathieson. Ariel says the lighting was used "to highlight material texture and spatial thresholds." A door like this is one of those thresholds. It's where our floor ends and the outside begins.

The dark shapes and the pale ones in this floor are the same timber.

Both are oak. The octagons are carbonised, which means the oak is heated until it turns a deep brown. The little diamonds between them are left natural.

Up close you can see the same grain in both. Only the colour has changed.

The hall is an old brick building at South Eveleigh, and most nights it's set with long tables and chairs. These photos were taken before the guests arrived, which is about the only time you see the whole floor at once.

Stone usually gets picked at the yard, standing right next to the slab.

The floor often gets picked weeks later, back at a desk. All you have then is a photo of the slab on your phone.

Look at the boards at the bottom of this photo.

On a pale oak you'd hardly notice the grain from here. On a dark one it's the first thing you see. The lines and flecks in the timber come forward as the colour gets deeper.

That's what we like about this floor at The Landmark in St Leonards. The kitchen around it is dark too, with dark timber cupboards, a black oven and brown stone on the bench. With that much dark in one room, a smooth floor could look flat. Up close, the grain keeps it from looking that way.

Each square on this board has a room waiting for it.

The board hangs in the Saint Martens display suite in Mosman. Under every sample is a small label that says where it goes.

The Taj Mahal stone and travertine are for the kitchen and ensuites. The timber veneer went onto the joinery, and the pale porcelain tile is in the bathrooms.

Our bit is the big square at the bottom: herringbone oak for the living room and kitchen. Watch for it in the reel as it runs past the island and up the stairs.

There's no rangehood over this cooktop.

The fan is built into the bench and pulls steam down, so nothing hangs from the ceiling. There are no overhead cupboards either. Mathieson put a long window there instead.

The fridge, wall ovens and most of the storage are in the butler's pantry next door. What's left in the kitchen is mostly marble, dark oak joinery and pale oak underfoot.

With so little else in the room, you see a lot more of those three. The floor carries straight on from the living room, so the kitchen feels like part of the same space.

This is what a floor looks like on a normal Tuesday.

These aren't from a photo shoot. The chairs are pulled out from the table. There's a cowhide by the sofa, and a scratching post for the cat.

The boards are our Bianco, from the Mega Collection. They're wide European Oak, and pale enough that the yellow front door at the end of the hall really stands out.

Most of the photos we share are taken after everything's been tidied and moved into place. We like these because somebody clearly lives here.

Most people see this floor from about a metre up, with a menu in their hand.

From there you're not taking in the whole room. You're looking at the oak beside your chair leg, the edge of the table and the gap to the next one.

So that's the part that has to look good up close. At Nobu the floor is Natural from our Milano Collection, finished in a matt lacquer so the lights don't bounce off it.

Treetops, the North Sydney skyline, and one oak floor from the lift to the living room.

Neutral Bay Apartment is one of eight homes Mathieson designed on a sloping site. Each home sits on one level. You step out of a private lift and walk west. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are at that end, looking across a green gully to the city.

Mathieson wanted an apartment that feels like a house. A lot of that is the planning. Some of it is a short list of materials. Dark stained oak joinery, soft grey Turkish marble, limestone in the bathrooms, and pale oak on the floor.

They chose the same oak for every room, and we supplied it. So you can walk from the lift to the far window and the floor never changes.

Mathieson did the architecture, interiors, furniture and styling. The pieces are from Fanuli and the art is through Artbank. Thanks to Ariel and the Mathieson team, and to Dave Wheeler for the photos.

It takes two of us to carry one of these boards.

Each one is 4 metres long and 320mm wide. You don't pick it up and swing it round a doorway on your own.

Laying them takes patience too. With a board this long, a tiny angle at one end turns into a gap you can see at the other. So the first row goes down slowly and carefully, and every row after it follows that line.

It's slower going than a standard board. A big room can end up only twenty or so boards across.

The photos only show the finished house, so we thought we'd tell you about the carrying.
