An original 1700’s hand-coloured copperplate engraving from Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, illustrated by François-Nicolas Martinet. Plate 568 depicts two flycatchers from Martinique: Gobe-Mouche huppé, de la Martinique and Gobe-Mouche brun, de la Martinique.
Published in France during the late 1700’s, this finely detailed engraving is printed on laid paper and hand coloured in the period. It is presented in a frame and remains an attractive example of early natural history illustration. Mounted and framed behind glass.
Good general antique condition with age-related toning to paper and some frame wear consistent with its age.
