Euphorbia is a favourite among florists because it provides texture, movement, and vibrant green colour. Rather than being the main flower, it often acts as a beautiful supporting element that makes other flowers stand out.

Here are some ways it can be used in floral design:

* As a filler flower – Its airy flower heads fill empty spaces without making an arrangement feel heavy.
* To add texture – The unusual shape creates visual interest and gives arrangements a more natural, garden-style look.
* For contrast – The bright lime-green flowers contrast beautifully with white, cream, pink, purple, orange, and burgundy blooms.
* In modern designs – Its strong lines suit contemporary and minimalist floral arrangements.
* In native-style arrangements – It combines well with Australian natives such as Banksia, Leucadendron, eucalyptus foliage, and waxflower.
* In wedding bouquets – It adds freshness and softness while keeping bouquets looking light and elegant.
* In table centrepieces – Euphorbia brings height and movement without overpowering the main flowers.

Flowers that pair beautifully with Euphorbia

* Roses
* Peonies
* Tulips
* Ranunculus
* Delphiniums
* Hydrangeas
* Banksias
* Orchids
* Eucalyptus foliage

Design principles

Euphorbia is excellent for demonstrating:

* Balance – Softens bold focal flowers.
* Rhythm – Repeating stems lead the eye through the arrangement.
* Contrast – Lime-green flowers make darker colours appear richer.
* Harmony – Blends naturally with foliage and seasonal flowers.
* Movement – Curving stems create a relaxed, flowing design.

Florist’s tip

Because Euphorbia produces a milky latex sap, always wear gloves when cutting it. After cutting, briefly dip the cut ends in very hot water or quickly sear them to help stop the sap from flowing before placing the stems in water. This also helps prevent the sap from affecting the vase water or nearby flowers.

For your floristry workshops, Euphorbia is an excellent teaching flower because students can learn how one unusual plant can add colour, texture, rhythm, and movement without becoming the focal point of the arrangement.

🌿 FLOWER SPOTLIGHT – BANKSIA 🌿

Did you know this amazing Australian native is made up of hundreds — sometimes thousands — of tiny flowers in one flower spike?

✨ Interesting Banksia facts:

🌼 Symbol of strength, resilience and renewal
🌼 Can survive bushfires and grow again
🌼 Produces rich nectar loved by birds and bees
🌼 Fossil evidence suggests Banksia may be over 40 million years old
🌼 Dries beautifully and keeps its shape
🌼 Long vase life — a florist favourite

🎨 Design facts:

✔ Mass and form flower
✔ Creates texture and strong focal points
✔ Perfect for church flowers, contemporary designs and native arrangements
✔ Adds rhythm, balance and contrast to floral designs

Spiritual thought ❤️
Just as Banksia can release new life after fire, difficult seasons in life can also bring growth, hope and restoration.

Nature is not only beautiful — it teaches us lessons too.
