Buy a home that’s already been extended and you usually inherit someone else’s decisions along with it.

This 1980s home in Nome came that way. The previous owners had converted the garage into a fourth bedroom with its own kitchenette and second bathroom. Practical, but it never matched the rest of the house.

The new owners wanted a new kitchen and a master suite with a walk-in robe and ensuite. Rather than design those rooms on their own, we renovated the whole home, extension included. The same cabinetry palette and matte black hardware now run through every zone, so the house finally reads as one home.

When people get in touch about renovating, the first thing they usually mention is finishes. New benchtops, new tiles.

Sometimes that really is all a home needs. If the layout works and the storage is fine, a cosmetic refresh is a sensible way to spend your money.

But if the kitchen is in the wrong spot, or the family has outgrown how the rooms connect, new surfaces won’t fix it. That’s a design-led renovation. The layout gets resolved first and the finishes follow.

The two jobs come with very different price tags, so it’s worth knowing which one you’re after before you start collecting quotes.

Let’s talk about the design fee, because it’s the bit people are often unsure about.

A lot of people picture a designer picking pretty tiles and tapware. That’s part of it, and yes, it’s fun. It’s just the smaller part.

Most of my time goes into making decisions in the right order, then putting them on paper. Joinery drawings, selections schedules, the lot. That way your builder can quote what you actually want instead of a guess.

When that’s missing, quotes fill the gaps with allowances. And allowances have a sneaky habit of turning into variations halfway through the build, right when changes cost the most.

Quick question. Where does your shampoo live?

If it’s the shower floor, you’re in good company. Most bathrooms just don’t give it anywhere else to go.

In this award-winning main bathroom, there’s a half-height shelf across the back of the shower. Room for every bottle, and the feature tile above it pulls in colours from the rest of the house.

It’s the boring stuff that makes a bathroom easy to live with. Save this for your reno list.

This award winner used to have a window.

When the carport beside it became the family’s new living room, the window was closed in. So I had a bathroom with zero daylight and a brief that said resort spa. No pressure.

The backlit mirror does most of the heavy lifting, and LED strips under the vanity and above the shower take care of the rest. The fluted vanity is a nod to the fluted joinery in their kitchen and living room, so it feels like the same house.

It won Bathroom Design at the 2026 HIA North Queensland Awards. Thanks to Reece Bush Constructions for building it so well.

When a new set of plans lands on my desk, I’m not thinking about colours first.

I’m looking at how the house is going to work.

Where are the awkward spots?
Is there enough storage?
Does the kitchen and pantry relationship make sense?
Are there decisions the builder is going to need sooner than the client realises?

That’s probably the civil engineering and builder admin part of my brain kicking in.

I’ve always looked at design as something that has to work in real life, not just look good on paper.

The finishes come later.

And I love that part too.

But the best results usually come from getting the planning right first.

Last Friday in Cairns, Urban Aspect won Bathroom Design at the 2026 HIA North Queensland Housing, Kitchen and Bathroom Awards.

I entered three spaces from our Charles Street project, two bathrooms and the kitchen, and all three made the finals. Having one of them win on the night was a very proud moment.

None of this happens without good clients and a good team. Thank you to the homeowners for trusting me with their home, and to Reece Bush Constructions .constructions.qld and every trade who brought the design to life. Thanks also to everyone who sent kind messages when I shared the finalist news.

A kitchen can look beautiful and still be frustrating to live with.

Before I’m thinking about finishes, I’m thinking about how the space is actually going to work day to day.

Where do the groceries land?
Can two people use the kitchen without getting in each other’s way?
Is the dishwasher in the right spot?
Is there enough prep space?
Where are all the everyday things actually going to live?

They’re simple questions, but they make such a difference.

Because once the layout works properly, then we can make it beautiful.

One thing I see all the time with renovations is people jumping straight to the fun decisions.

Tiles, benchtops, cabinetry colours, tapware.

And honestly, I completely get it. That’s the part everyone is excited about.

But before I’m looking at any of that, I’m usually thinking about whether the room is actually going to work properly.

Is there enough storage? Does the kitchen layout make sense? Has something been missed that the builder is going to need an answer on soon?

Those decisions are not nearly as exciting, but they can have a much bigger impact on how the finished space feels and functions.

Beautiful finishes matter. I love that part too.

But they work so much better when the planning underneath them has been thought through first.

That’s why, for me, the planning always comes before the pretty stuff.

Colour selections are one of those parts of a build that can look deceptively simple from the outside.

But there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

We’re considering how the flooring, cabinetry, benchtops, tiles, paint, tapware and exterior finishes all work together, not just individually, but as one complete home.

Undertones matter. Natural and artificial light matter. Texture, contrast and repetition matter. Even a beautiful finish can feel wrong if it doesn’t relate properly to the materials around it.

We generally start with the larger fixed finishes and work through the palette layer by layer, checking each decision against the overall direction of the home.

The goal isn’t to choose the most interesting sample on the table.

It’s to create a home that feels cohesive, considered and still feels right years from now.
