The Knightwood fits a wall that's too narrow for a wide fire.

It's a portrait fire, tall rather than wide. A slim wall or hallway suits it, as does the gap between two windows. The logs are real hand-charred English oak, with darker rear glass giving the flame a deeper backdrop. Choose the Black Edition for Schott anti-reflective front glass, which cuts the glare as well.

The Lopi 6015 HO GS2 is the largest of the premium High Output linears. Choose driftwood, birch log, tumbled stone or glass for the fire to burn over. That choice changes the whole feel of the room.

Ceramic glass sends far more radiant heat into the room than tempered glass, and the dual six-speed fans move it around. GreenSmart 2 modulates the flame to hold the temperature you set. You're getting 14.19kW of output, heating up to 260m².

Start with the palette when you're planning a living room around a fireplace.

Soft, pale walls let the flame be the warmest colour in the room. Here, there's a hint of teal in the canvas and a few stems of pampas on a low ledge. One warm cushion finishes it off. That's enough.

At Maison Soleil, the fire looks as if it was always meant to be there.

This is the living room in Three Birds Renovations' House 18 on Sydney's North Shore. A limestone chimney breast anchors the room, with a Lopi 864 Clean Face 40K set into the stone.

Clean Face means no grills or louvers, with minimal metal between the glass and the stone. The fireplace feels part of the wall. It belongs there.

Behind the glass you get 8.1kW of output, enough to heat up to 185m². A 64% turndown lets you bring the flame right down on a mild spring evening, when you're after the look more than the warmth.

The fireplace is the easy part. What sits behind the flame is where it starts to feel like yours.

Fireback liners are one of the simplest ways to go from choosing a unit to choosing a look. Herringbone brick, handmade brick, straight brick, stacked tan brick, ledgestone, old world stucco, or black glass, which reflects the flame and visually doubles the depth of the fire.

Worth knowing where it applies: fireback liners are an inbuilt gas option. They are not available on the freestanding gas models, and the wood range does not use them at all.

If you are renovating this spring, it is worth settling the finish early.

Some evenings you don't need the heat. You just want the fire.

It is the question everyone asks in spring: what does a fireplace do for the other nine months? A British Fire runs the full flame picture with the heater off, so it stays a feature of the room all year instead of going dark until winter.

One fire, two rooms, no wall in the way.

The Lopi 4415 ST HO GS2 and ProBuilder 36 CF ST GS2 are both double-sided gas fireplaces, designed to sit between two living spaces and share the flame with both.

Worth deciding early which room you want to favour. The 4415 ST is configured at installation, so the warm air can be weighted toward one room or split evenly. The ProBuilder 36 CF ST is evenly distributed to both sides. Neither is adjustable afterwards.
