Matisse Mediums ⭐

MM29 Final Varnish Satin Finish (turps based). This varnish produces a hard, non-yellowing, protective coating with a semi-gloss sheen formulated to match the sheen of Matisse paint films. It is nearly invisible with a low sheen level whilst remaining clear and free of haze. Unlike water-based varnishes, this varnish is removable or strippable, and can be re-dissolved in mineral turpentine, which has no effect on Matisse acrylic paints: thus, a painting may be thoroughly cleaned and re-varnished without affecting the painted surface. MM29 Satin Finish Varnish is an ideal varnish for restoration work (may be used on oil paintings).

Why check before painting?

Because two colours can behave very differently even if they look similar in the tube. If you don’t know the transparency, you might put down a layer expecting it to cover something, only to find the colour underneath is still showing, or expect a glaze and accidentally completely cover your previous work.

Transparent paints allow a lot of the surface or colour underneath to show through.

Great for:

• Glazing, building up colour in thin layers
• Creating depth and luminosity
• Painting over an existing colour without completely hiding it
• Watercolour-like effects when appropriately diluted/used with a suitable medium

Semi-transparent / semi-opaque paints sit in the middle. They allow some of what’s underneath to show through, but provide more coverage than a transparent colour.

Great for:

• Building up layers gradually
• Adding colour while still maintaining some of the underlying painting
• Creating depth without completely covering previous layers

Opaque colours have strong covering power, so they largely hide what’s underneath.

Great for:

• Blocking in solid areas of colour
• Strong highlights and light areas
• Creating crisp shapes and defined forms
• Painting over darker colours with good coverage

Despite its unassuming appearance, this extraordinary yellow remained hidden in the shadows for over 20 years after its discovery in 1830, languishing on the laboratory shelf until someone finally recognized its potential as an artist's colour. Watercolourists swiftly embraced its charms, discovering a unique secret as soon as water was added. The initially dull leathery yellow mass-tone transformed when diluted, unveiling a vibrant under-tone. This distinctive quality of Aureolin adds a layer of complexity, making it almost like two colours in one.

Matisse Mediums ⭐

MM28 Polymer Satin Varnish is a water-based acrylic varnish containing matting agents to reduce sheen, resulting in a satin finish which is not too glossy but still has a lively look about it without being matt. MM28 Polymer Satin Varnish will help to bring out the intense, vibrant colours of the Matisse Professional Artist Acrylics range. Use as a final varnish over a dried, well-cured acrylic painting where a satin or semigloss sheen is required (and the use of MM29 Final Varnish Satin Finish (Turps-based) is not appropriate).

This varnish may be used to matt off a work for photography or wherever a subdued satin finish is required. It is most suitable as a protective coating particularly over large works exposed to damage in public galleries, commercial paintings required for floodlit photographic reproduction and paintings that would be improved by eliminating unbalanced glossy highlights.
