She loves to combine playful styling with the use of colour, texture and form to create visually exciting and unexpected spaces. The careful curation of distinctive contemporary and vintage pieces with an attention to comfort and functionality is a constant characteristic of her work. From the early days of working as Design Assistant to her mother Bette Watson in their family owned interior design business beginning in the 1980s, together with simultaneously establishing the long running iconic Surfers Paradise fashion boutique ‘return’ in the 1980s and 1990s, Janelle has worked on many residential and commercial design projects, and has been involved in the worlds of interior design, fashion and art for over thirty years. Janelle has a passion for collecting fine art and objects and is a self confessed ‘Chair Addict’. “Decorating is storytelling. I believe your home should reflect your personal history and that the best interiors are ones which come from a considered combination of high and low style. Curating contemporary and vintage pieces with fine art, bespoke detailing and custom-made elements, is an important part in creating successful and exciting decor. I would love to help you create your story.” – Janelle
Janelle is a mixed-media artist, a writer, director and producer. In 2020 Janelle released The Lonely Road, a short film that attained international recognition.

Bette, 1957.
Here is my beautiful mother Bette pictured here in her wedding photo. The dress was a classic sort of ‘New Look’ Dior full skirt to the knee style in the palest of pinks.
Mum was a singer and model in the late ‘50’s and 60’s.

Seeing this wedding photo is bitter sweet. My parents divorced in the 1970’s and Mum and I lived on the Gold Coast while my father returned to Sydney where his commercial art business was located.

On one of my trips to visit my father as a child in the late 1970’s, I remember the day I was playing in his workshop.

I came across a very large bin full of paint rags. Inside that very large bin were pieces of pale pink embroidered chiffon fabric.
On further investigation I realised that the fabric was indeed my mother’s wedding dress ripped into rags. The very dress that she wears in this picture.

A sad discovery but highly symbolic of their marriage.

Sometimes looking through old photos can be an emotionally disturbing activity, forcing you to return to the memories of a life lived. Not always your own life but the lives of the very significant others.

Life speeds by. Perhaps it’s better not to get caught up in the past. When you come across those boxes of old photos hidden away in dark cupboards perhaps it’s best to just shut the door. Always move forward, never look back.
Bette Watson would have turned 96 this year.

In my latest on DECORATORS ZEITGEIST Substack article I investigate the hollowness of Celebrity decor editorial and wonder what might reinvigorate and spark interest.

Perhaps a return to cocktail hour shelter shoots. Night time photography of interiors was jettisoned by the industry at the turn of the century or before.

Bring back the glamour of the nightclub, sexy silhouettes of 1970’s and 80’s Architectural Digests.

Pop on over to see some of my favourite night time shots.
Let’s bring sexy back! Happy hour shoots minus CELEBRITY!!
