Boyd Park is a linear reserve in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. Featuring a playground, open grass areas, shared paths and off-leash dog areas, it is well connected to public transport options and popular with locals for recreation.

Glen Eira City Council recently installed solar lighting along the park’s extensive network of shared pathways. The upgrade enables pedestrians and cyclists to feel safer and more comfortable using the route at night, while also aligning with Council’s broader sustainability goals by reducing both energy consumption and environmental impact.

Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied the Orca Solar Vertex SL Solar Lighting System combined with the Cree Lighting XSPM Street & Area Light as part of the upgrade. The systems were programmed to provide consistent light output all night, and designed to meet the requirements of AS/NZS 1158.3.1:2020 Lighting for Roads & Public Spaces (Pedestrian Area Lighting – Subcategory PP3). Any obtrusive light reaching neighbouring residential properties was minimised thanks to the NanoOptic® Precision Delivery Grid Optics built into the XSPM Series.

Addressing unwanted spill light along the perimeter of an outdoor lighting installation is a complex challenge. Whether the goal is to limit light trespass to neighbouring properties (including compliance with AS/NZS 4282), protect local wildlife or to simply optimise your design, specifying a luminaire with stringent light control is essential.

The D-Series Street & Area Light from Holophane is one such solution, mitigating obtrusive light through innovative backlight control measures, including specialised point-source black light engines, integrated specular reflectors with optimised optics, and dedicated light-absorbing backlight shields.

Holophane’s Long & Narrow Backlight Cut-off Optic (BLC) uses these combined measures to project light directly forward and sideways with as little as 0.5% of total backlight reaching beyond the boundary line or column placement. Perfect for optimal back-lighting results when used on paths, curbs and perimeter edging. LEDs are not visible from the rear, which helps to reduce glare from behind. Holophane's Right Corner Cut-off Optic (RCCO) and Left Corner Cut-off Optic (LCCO) apply the same principles to restrict spill light to one side, specifically designed for use in perimeter corners found in car parks and other outdoor areas.

Beyond its advanced backlight control, the D-Series delivers impressive performance across all three variants, offering a wide range of lumen packages and traditional optical distributions. Excellent thermal management ensures consistent output and long-term reliability, while future-proof connectivity options complete the package.

In order to address car parking demand around one of Melbourne’s busiest retail and entertainment areas, Monash Council recently redeveloped Bogong Car Park in the heart of Glen Waverley.

The $40m+ extension added four additional levels of car parking, providing more than five hundred new spaces, taking total capacity to over one thousand. In addition to the extra parking spots, the redevelopment also included a new building facade featuring public art, upgraded lifts, electric vehicle charging bays, a parking assistance system, new wayfinding signage and photovoltaic solar panels to help power the building.

Advanced Lighting Technologies supplied a range of lighting solutions as part of the redevelopment, including the Cree Lighting Dot Series throughout all levels of the undercover car park, the Cree Lighting XSP Street & Area Light and ADLT DuraRail LED Batten on the rooftop and the Cree Lighting CPY Series Canopy Light for the transition zone on the ground floor.

The Spirit of Tasmania is an iconic ferry service that operates between mainland Australia and Tasmania, transporting passengers, vehicles and cargo across Bass Strait. Renowned for its reliability, Spirit of Tasmania plays a vital role in connecting Tasmania with the rest of Australia and vice versa.

In late 2022, Spirit of Tasmania relocated its Victorian operations from Port Melbourne to a new, purpose-built terminal in Geelong. The move to Geelong offers more space, improved facilities, modern amenities and a streamlined boarding process. The move was also undertaken to accommodate two new, larger ships - Spirit of Tasmania IV & V.
