KALON HOUSE | FREEMANS WATERHOLE

With the incredible landscape views, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor was paramount for this Hunter Valley retreat.

Vertical stacking doors and a dark paired back material palette allow for an uninterrupted connection to the beautiful natural setting and expansive horizon beyond.

A place to slow down, recharge and reconnect.

Architectural Insights | Making your home more sustainable

Sustainable design goes beyond technological enhancements - it starts with looking at light, ventilation and materiality.

πŸ”… Make the most of natural light - bring daylight into the room wherever possible with carefully positioned windows, vertical stacking doors and skylights.

πŸ”„ Allow for natural passive ventilation - creating the opportunities for cross-ventilation will enable your home to be cooled naturally, reducing the need for air conditioning.

⚑ Make the switch from gas to electric - the most efficient way to reduce your environmental footprint and minimise running costs and reliance on fossil fuels.

πŸ”¨ Choose materials that are enduring - when deciding on materials, consider selecting based on durability and longevity to avoid needing frequent maintenance or, heaven forbid, replacement.

PACIFIC RESIDENCE | Restorative spaces in the home are orientated toward the expansive Pacific Ocean outlook and glimpses toward Wedding Cake Island off the shore from Coogee Beach.

Curved frameless glass ensure sight lines remain continuous as the dramatic outlook changes with the times of day and weather conditions.

PACIFIC RESIDENCE | In detail of the main staircase.

Natural daylight from the large format skylight, Flos wall lighting and soft curved details. The lime plaster walls and balustrade shift with tones of light and time of day.

PACIFIC RESIDENCE | Warm, inviting and full of character for the heart of this family home. A hop and a skip from the sands of Coogee Beach, the tones reference the abundance of the coastal Sydney setting.

Natural Patagonia stone, walnut cabinetry, and lime plaster walls.

Architectural Insights | How you can make a heritage home more contemporary without losing character.

πŸŒ“ Create Deliberate Contrasts | Clean lines and modern materials can comfortably sit alongside heritage features to pay homage to the historic legacy of a place and ensure a space suits your contemporary lifestyle.

🏑 Retain what gives your home character | Identify what heritage features make the home distinctive and retain or restore them.

πŸ”… Invite in Natural Light | Strategically placed skylights and larger openings can transform darker heritage interiors.

CLOVELLY ABODE | Through a unifying palette of finishes and restored original flooring and detailing throughout, the contrast between traditional and contemporary is softened. This evokes a feeling of openness, emphasising the sense of scale within.
