Before installation starts, there is work worth showing.

Subfloor condition, finished heights and adjoining surfaces all influence the preparation required. They also affect how the flooring work is priced and scheduled.

Grinding and levelling might disappear beneath the finished floor. They still deserve a clear place in the scope.

Australian Trade Floors provides floor preparation and installation for builders, flooring retailers and property owners across the Central Coast, Newcastle, Sydney and Hunter.

The sample you love in the showroom can look different at home.

Natural light, evening lighting and surrounding colours all affect how flooring looks. Before choosing, lay samples flat beside your cabinetry and furniture. Check them during the day, then again with your lights on.

Compare a few boards together, too. One small sample only shows part of the colour and grain variation.

Save this for your next sample visit. Need help narrowing down your options? Send us a message.

Here’s a flashback to one of our favourite installs.

There’s a fair bit of planning behind carrying herringbone through multiple rooms. Seeing it all come together makes the extra time on the set-out worth it.

Proud of this one, and happy to give it another spot on the feed.

Choosing engineered oak? Here’s what actually matters. A thicker veneer for a longer lifespan, a quality cross-layered ply core that stays stable, and proper prep on the slab underneath. Get those three right and you’ve got a floor that lasts. Save this before you sign your flooring quote.

Two flooring quotes can cover the same room and include very different work.

Before comparing the price, check these three things:

▪️ The product
The brand, range, colour and board dimensions. Confirm the quantity, cutting waste allowance and installation method.

▪️ The preparation
What preparation is included? What remains an allowance, and how will any additional costs be assessed and approved?

▪️ The finishing
Check skirting, scotia, doorway transitions, removal and disposal. Confirm what is included at handover, including care information.

If something is unclear, ask for it in writing before accepting. A detailed quote helps you compare the full job.

Save this checklist for your next flooring quote.

The board you love in the showroom is only part of the picture.

Across a full room, pattern, natural variation and surrounding finishes become much more noticeable. Here’s what to check before choosing your floor.

LAMINATE: LOOK FOR PATTERN REPEATS
Laminate uses a printed design, so grain patterns repeat. View several full planks together, rather than judging one small sample. During installation, board placement helps avoid obvious repeats sitting beside each other.

ENGINEERED TIMBER: UNDERSTAND THE GRADE
Knots, grain and colour variation contribute to the finished appearance. One sample cannot represent the full range within a product. Ask for the supplier’s grading guide and completed-floor photos. Grade descriptions can vary between suppliers.

CABINETRY: COMPARE THE UNDERTONES
Two finishes can look similar separately, yet feel different together. Place your flooring, cabinetry and benchtop samples alongside each other. Check them in daylight and under the lights in your home.

Our work involves looking at individual boards and the overall layout. Those small placement decisions become part of the floor you see every day.

Save this guide for your showroom visit or send it to someone planning their finishes.

A finished floor should look simple. Getting it there usually isn’t.

This project came down to the details most people never notice once the job is finished.

Floor heights. Doorways. Carpet joins. Tile transitions. Board direction. Subfloor condition.

Every one of those decisions affects how the floor looks, feels and performs once the home is in use.

Swipe through and have a closer look at the areas that usually tell you whether the job was properly thought through.
