A BRIEF HISTORY:
Located on the Port Augusta Road approx. 300 metres north of the Maritime Museum (HMAS Whyalla), Tanderra Craft Village was established in 1990 as the permanent home for the development of crafts in Whyalla, as well as providing an outlet for locally made handicrafts. After years of disuse the BHP single men's quarters was given a new lease on life when in 1989 it was proposed to
turn the quarters into a CRAFT VILLAGE. So the journey began...
Due to the dedication, support & hard work of Tanderra's Management Board & its members, one persons vision has become a reality. The men's dining room is now our main MARKET HALL where stall holders from near & far come each market to showcase their wares. The old kitchen is now the TANDERRA CAFE where the most deliciously tempting meals & mouth watering sweets are created by our team of volunteers. The single men's quarters (accommodation blocks) are now home to individually run CRAFT SHOPS as well as housing a variety of HOBBY GROUPS (refer below).
