❤️ Still here, still local, still doing what I love!

October is nearly over, and before Small Business Month comes to an end, I thought I might sneak in a little shout-out for my own business. Hey, someone’s got to do it! 😉

For more than 20 years, I have been incredibly proud to be part of the Wingham business community. From the early days of Bent on Food, through my years involved on committees and boards supporting local businesses, I have always believed in the potential of our beautiful little town.

Those years were pretty special, and I am enormously proud of what we all achieved together.

These days, life looks a little different.

You might not see me around town quite as much as you did when I was running the café, but my passion for small business and this wonderful community hasn’t changed.

My little shop, Bent on Life, is very much a labour of love, filled with beautiful homewares, thoughtful gifts, creative inspiration and things that make life just that little bit lovelier.

Like so many small business owners, I know it isn’t always easy, but I still believe in what I do and love bringing something special to Wingham.

I might have stepped away from the café, but I certainly haven’t stepped away from Wingham. ❤️

I am having a nice quiet long weekend, doing lots of thinking about my future and the future of small business in general. It’s been incredibly tough lately and I am not the only one feeling it.

I was on a local page a few days ago and I was actually quite surprised by how many people were talking about buying things from Amazon. And it just made me think about how incredibly important it is for consumers to shop local and support small business.

I know it is tough for households too. Interest rates have risen again, the cost of living is high and everyone is watching where their money goes.

But small businesses are dealing with those same rising costs.

And although I never passed on my card fees in my shop, i did in my cafe where customers tapped $5 sales, but now businesses can no longer pass on the cost of accepting card payments as a surcharge, even though they still pay those fees.

On top of that, the ATO has just announced that from the end of November businesses will no longer be able to pay their tax bills by credit card. And I know there are small businesses, particularly in hospitality, that have used a credit card to get through a difficult cash flow period.

So I suppose this is just a little plea.

If you have money to spend, please think local first.

Shop in the little store. Buy from the local maker. Have coffee at the local café. Shop regional. Support Australian small businesses where you can.

I am not asking anybody to spend money they do not have, and I completely understand that sometimes you need to find the cheapest option.

But if we all automatically go online or to the big guys every time we need something, eventually our little towns are going to look very different.

Small businesses employ local people. We donate to the raffles. We sponsor the sporting teams. We support the schools and the fundraisers. We help keep our main streets alive.

We really do need our communities at the moment.

So when you can, please think small and think local first. ❤️
