🇨🇳 China Diaries Part 4 | Finding the gorgeous goodies! ❤️

Now for the really exciting part of my trip. Finding beautiful things.

I’ve spent years choosing homewares from some wonderful suppliers, but this trip was about taking the next step and having products made especially for Ruby’s Home Store and the Hometastic Box.

And goodness me, the possibilities.

One of the things that surprised me most was just how much manufacturers can customise.

Different colours, materials, finishes, sizes and even products made entirely to your own specifications.

But there’s a lot more to consider than whether something looks pretty.

Minimum order quantities, manufacturing times, prices and quality all have to work for my little business.

And sometimes the smallest change can mean ordering hundreds more than I’d planned. That’s when my sensible business head has to take over from my love of gorgeous goodies! 😂

But here’s the exciting news…

I’ve arranged to have TWO products made in my chosen colours, complete with packaging specially branded for Ruby’s Home Store. ❤️

I can’t reveal what they are just yet, but I’m rather excited about seeing them come to life.

It’s another big step for my little business, and I can’t wait to share more with you.

🇨🇳 China, where do I even begin?

I went to China to find beautiful products for Ruby’s Home Store and the Hometastic Box.

But I came home with so much more than that.

This was very much a working trip, with long days visiting trade shows, meeting manufacturers and sourcing products. There wasn’t much time for sightseeing, but I still managed to squeeze in a few experiences and take plenty of photos along the way!

I’ve walked thousands of steps, seen some extraordinary sights, eaten yummy food, met wonderful people and discovered a whole new world of possibilities for my little business.

Some things amazed me. Some things made me laugh. And quite a few left me completely speechless!

I’m still trying to get my head around everything I’ve experienced.

So here’s another little collection of moments from my trip that I wanted to share with you. ♥️

🇨🇳 China Diaries Part 3 | The team who made it possible ❤️

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt in business is that you don’t have to do everything yourself. You just need to find the right people to help you.

And I certainly found them in China.

Kristy LK and JY from Source Haus were an incredible team throughout the trip. Together, they brought years of experience, knowledge and guidance to help me find the right products and understand what’s involved in bringing them to life.

Kristy has years of experience building her own successful Australian business, Incy Interiors, and is now growing her new jewellery brand, Good Goods. She helped organise an incredible trip tailored specifically to what I’m trying to achieve with Ruby’s Home Store and the Hometastic Box.

LK and JY were my interpreters, negotiators, advisers and guides. But their knowledge goes so much further than translating conversations.

There’s a huge difference between finding a beautiful product and actually getting it manufactured to your specifications, at the right price and with the quality you expect.

That’s where all three of them were invaluable.

I’ve asked a million questions, learnt an enormous amount and probably driven them all slightly mad along the way. 😂

But the very best part?

I’ve come home with an amazing sourcing team and three wonderful new friends. ♥️

And at 61, I’m reminded that it’s never too late to learn something new, take a chance or make new friends.

Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me…

The first photo above was taken during one of our very first Ruby’s Home Store photoshoots. Back then, I sold bedding and bedheads, which explains why there was a bed at the end of our wharf!

Looking at it now, I realise just how much both my business and I have changed over the years.

As I’ve been working on my social media lately, I also realised there are still quite a few things you probably don’t know about me…

🥛 I can’t drink milk, even on cereal. I blame those little bottles of warm milk we were forced to drink at school in England.

☕ Despite being English, I can’t stand tea… or coffee. I’m addicted to Pepsi Max.

🧶 Once I’ve finally stopped scrolling and replying to your lovely comments, I unwind by crocheting. There’s currently a scarf on my hook for my granddaughter Pippa.

🐶 And my parents bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, so I spent much of my childhood at dog shows and junior handler classes.

Over the coming weeks, I’m going to share a little more of my story. Not just the business side of things, but the person behind Ruby’s Home Store too.

🇨🇳 CHINA DIARIES | PART 2: Just HOW big is this place?!

I’ve been to some pretty big trade shows over the years, but NOTHING prepared me for the Canton Fair in Guangzhou!

I honestly don’t think photos or videos can do justice to the sheer enormity of it.

The exhibition complex covers more than 1.6 MILLION square metres. It’s mind-blowing!

On Saturday alone, I walked over 20,000 steps. My poor feet! 😂

And here’s the really astonishing bit. After two days of walking, looking and exploring, we’d only covered Hall D, the home decoration section!

There are thousands upon thousands of products. Some absolutely beautiful, with incredible quality. Others? Well, let’s just say there’s something for everyone! 🤣

But this isn’t just one enormous shopping trip.

I’m here to find beautiful, quality products for Ruby’s Home Store and future Hometastic Boxes. And finding something I love is only the beginning.

There’s quality to consider, minimum order quantities, production times and, of course, whether the numbers actually work for my little business.

It’s exciting, exhausting and occasionally completely overwhelming. But what an experience!

And I certainly couldn’t do this without some very special people helping me along the way.

In Part 3, I’ll introduce you to the wonderful people making this adventure possible. ❤️

🇨🇳 CHINA DIARIES | PART 1: The adventure begins!

If you’d told me five years ago that I’d be travelling to China on a sourcing trip for my little homewares business, I’d never have believed you!

But here I am, at 61, having another adventure. ❤️

After leaving the Central Coast on Wednesday afternoon, flying to Hong Kong and transferring to Guangzhou, I finally arrived.

And my goodness, what a place!

My first impression? Everything is HUGE! The city seems to go on forever, the roads are enormous, the cars are enormous and even my beautiful hotel is enormous!

I was greeted like a rock star by a lovely driver holding a sign with my name on it. All thanks to the wonderful Christy, who has organised everything.

And thank goodness she has! Very few people I’ve encountered speak English, so I’m extremely grateful to have someone looking after me.

My first day wasn’t actually about work. It was about exploring!

We met up with Katrina and visited an incredible jewellery market. Beads, silver, colours and jewellery findings as far as the eye could see. And yes, I might have bought myself a few bangles. Well, it would have been rude not to! 😂

Then we explored Yong Qing Fang, a beautiful historic part of Guangzhou.

Imagine Covent Garden meets Venice, with a generous helping of Chinese chaos!

Quirky little shops, narrow streets, a canal and crowds of young people dressed in traditional Chinese costumes. Although I’m fairly certain the fluffy ears weren’t part of the original outfits! Apparently it’s quite the social media trend.

We finished with a gorgeous Chinese dinner before I finally collapsed into bed.

And that was just day one!

I still have to pinch myself sometimes. I started Ruby’s Home Store from home, never imagining where this little business might take me.

And now I’m in China, looking for beautiful things to bring back to you.

Next up, the real reason I’m here. The sourcing begins!
